Jubilee JumpStart
A nonprofit high-quality early childhood center supporting low-income children and families in Adams
Our staff spent the day advocating for the Pay Equity fund for Early Childhood Educators. We appreciate our families who supported our closure so all of our staff could attend.
If you want to help, call your DC council perdon and tell them, "I support early childhood educators. Don't cut the Pay Equity Fund."
JJS Friends and Family, we invite you to join us during March into Reading. Visit us at https://jubilejumpstart.org/mir2024 to sign-up to be a JumpStar Reader or explore other ways to get involved.
Jubilee JumpStart is full of diverse families too! Ms. Lamika and Ms. Aiyana share insight on parenting, culture, history, and the Black community!!
1.Why is important to celebrate Black History Month?
M.L.. "Because this way we can give everybody the knowledge of it".
M.A. “To preserve history, to remind us how far we have come and how to move forward”.
2.What does it mean to be a Black parent?
M.L. "Means everything: is my culture, my race. I'm very proud to be a black mom".
M.A. "It means to be resilient, a parent that stands against a lot of adversity. As a black mom, is very important to me that my children are acknowledged to be culturally black."
3.What is the best of Black culture?
M.L. "The food".
M.A. “The best part of our culture, is that being black, you can be culturally different. We come from different branches, but we are still connected”.
4.What is something about Black communities that we should know?
L.J. " The challenges that we have".
A.K. “That we need to keep the tightness between/for us”.
We're celebrating more of our rich diverse culture here at Jubilee JumpStart. In celebration of Black History Month we are highlighting two of our beautiful staff memebers.
1.Why is important to celebrate Black History Month?
A.F. "Because we celebrate all the people who made it possible for us black people to be here".
A.K. “Is important because black culture, traditions, and accomplishments are a key ingredient to this county. Even through adversities, our story is beautiful and vital to learn”.
2.What does it mean to be a Black Early Childhood Educator?
A.F. "I'm a teacher of little humans. I'm building a foundation for they to develop into amazing adults".
A.K. "Being a black Early Childhood Educator is very important to me because I get mirror the black educators in my early years. Growing up East of the River of Southeast Dc, there were a few early ed teachers that looked like me. I truly believe that representation matters because with those few, they motivated me to pivot into Early Childhood Education”.
3.What is the best of Black culture?
A.F "The way we dress" (insert a huge smile here)
A.K. “Where do I start? I love everything about our culture. From our different hues of blackness, our music (preferably Gogo because I’m a DC native), our fashion, our Ebonics and most of all; our swag. I love it all!”.
4.What is something about Black communities that we should know?
A.F. " That not all black communities are bad... and take a step out of your initial outlook to come in and dig deeper into our community".
A.K. “People should know that the Black community is enriched with so much history of people who help pave the way outside of the people who’s in the history books. I encourage people to take a trip to the National Museum of African American History & Culture and see where our story began”.
Why representation matters!
Happy Black history month.
