Deaf Women of Color They expressed and shared their concerns about the apparent lack of support and unity among Deaf women of color.

Back in fall of 2005, the day began when the four ladies, Leticia Arellano, Thuan Nguyen, Francisca Rangel and Laurene Simms gathered over lunch for a meeting at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC. Also, they learned that there is a need for people of color to unite as a group. They met regularly and created a vision of

two organizations: Deaf People of Color, and The Deaf Women of Color Union. As a result, they hosted a one-day workshop designed for the Deaf women of color at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School’s lounge on Gallaudet University, Washington, DC on Saturday, March 4, 2006. The logo, as shown above, illustrates the byline of the workshop which was, “We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening our own.” (author unknown). The primary topic of the workshop was “Multiple Identities: Deaf, race and culture.” The participants claimed that the workshop was a powerful eye-opening experience and a true awakening. Two years later, on March 1 & 2, 2008, a second workshop was held at Ole Jim, Gallaudet University, Washington, and DC. The purpose was to empower individuals as Deaf women of color. The conference spanned two-days, and also included a performance called the “Moving Manicured Hands”. A troupe of eleven Deaf women from DC area performed a show about personal experiences being Deaf women of color. Both workshop and performance were a huge success. Throughout the meetings and workshops, during the year 2007, Leticia also acted as co-coordinator of Deaf Latino Conference in Washington, DC; Laurene was the Chair of the First National Deaf People of the Color Conference, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Leticia and Francisca was the c0-coordinators for the first Deaf Youth Latino Leadership conference in Washington, DC. Following suit, Thuan will chair the 2nd National Deaf People of the Color Conference which will be held in Portland, Oregon on June 24-27, 2010. To date, Alaina Mitchell of New York City is currently a chair of Deaf Women of Color III Conference, which will be held in LaGuardia, New York on March 6-8, 2009. The theme is “Generation of Diversity Women, Changing Lives”

So…the herstory of Deaf Women of Color begins with this quote by Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
