🎃👻 Ever wondered where Halloween started? Dive into history with us at kirwans as we celebrate the ancient Irish festival of Samhain, the true predecessor of today’s Halloween! Centuries ago in Ireland, Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter, a time when the boundary between this world and the otherworld could be more easily crossed.
As part of the Samhain festivities, our ancestors lit grand bonfires to ward off evil spirits, and they donned masks and costumes to confuse or repel wandering ghosts. This tradition of disguise and celebration of the supernatural has traveled through the ages and across seas to evolve into the Halloween we know and love today.
Join us tonight for an evening filled with authentic Irish music, and a toast to ancient traditions with our special Samhain brews and spirits. Let’s stir the cauldron of history together on this magical night! 🍻👻

🍀 Meet Mark Kirwan, owner of Kirwan’s on The Wharf. A man as tall as Tipperary itself, with a heart bigger than Texas! When he’s not pulling pints at Kirwan’s on The Wharf 🍻, this 6'8" gentle giant is saving souls of the four-legged kind 🐴🐕 on his Rappahannock farm, Kirwan’s Farm. Horses, alpacas, donkeys, and more have found a piece of heaven far from their troubled pasts, thanks to this big-hearted Irishman.
From D.C. cop 👮♂️ to pub-owner-turned-animal savior, Mark is a true ‘Dark Horse,’ bringing a bit of the Emerald Isle's magic to Virginia. It’s a story full of heart, hope, and that unmistakable Irish spirit, where every creature has a story 📖 and every pint has a toast 🥂. So raise a glass to Mark, the rescuer of souls, both big and small!

Here’s a moment frozen in time. The USS Barry (DD-933), named after Commodore John Barry, a founder of the U.S. Navy and an Irishman no less! This mighty destroyer sailed through the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and even saw action during the Vietnam War. After nearly 30 years of service, she was decommissioned, and who better to help es**rt her than our own Mark Kirwan! Spot him to the right of the ship, giving a final farewell.
This stunning photo, kindly donated by a Washington Post photographer, now has pride of place in one of our private rooms at Kirwan’s. So the next time you’re in, raise a glass to a ship that weathered history, and perhaps catch a story or two about battles fought and seas conquered. History and a pint? We think that's a perfect match!
✨🍀 Here at Kirwan’s, we don’t just pour Guinness. We craft a masterpiece! 🍻 Whether you’re seeking good craic or just that velvety smooth pour, we serve up the perfect pint every time. We’d call it magic, but it’s really just 260 years of Guinness know how with a wee sprinkle of Irish pride. 🇮🇪
So, next time you're at the Wharf, stop by and let us show you how it’s done because life's too short for a bad pint. Sláinte! 🍀✨
Get ready to rock the night away! 🎸 This Friday, Jojo Bayliss hits the stage, and Saturday it’s Spike Burton bringing down the house! They’ll be rocking out starting at 10 PM—and who knows when the party will stop! 🤘

September 11th is not just a date. It’s a testament to the courage and resilience of countless heroes. On this 23rd anniversary, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, but we also honor the extraordinary bravery of those who ran toward danger, not away from it. The 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel gave their lives in the selfless act of trying to save others. Many of them knew the risks, yet they went forward anyway, embodying the true spirit of sacrifice and service. Their courage serves as a reminder that even in the face of unimaginable terror, humanity’s capacity for bravery and compassion shines the brightest. Today, we renew our promise to never forget them and the example they set for us all.
