FABBS mourns the devastating loss of Norman B. Anderson, PhD, who passed away entirely too young on March 1st. Dr. Anderson had just begun his term as FABBS President-elect this year, and had already made significant contributions to the mission of FABBS.
He will be remembered by his colleagues for his kindness, wisdom, mentorship, humility, friendship, and a remarkable legacy in the behavioral sciences.

Amplifying Voices and Building Bridges: Toward a More Inclusive Future The symposium will bring together people living with mental illness, clinicians, and communities to reflect on past and present challenges in mental health research and chart a more inclusive path forward.
The House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology held a hearing with the goal of ensuring that federal agencies are protecting U.S. science and technology development from malevolent foreign agents. Testimony shed light on the complexities of safeguarding scientific integrity.

Congressional leaders in both chambers have agreed to, yet another, continuing resolution to avoid a partial (Agriculture, Transportation and Housing, Energy and Water, and Veteranโs Affairs) government shutdown after March 1. March 8th is the deadline for the other eight bills, including those funding FABBS sciences.
While averting a shutdown is good news, keep in mind that the fiscal year ended on September 30, 2023 and that three of the four bills continue to be contentious and will still need to be resolved.

Congratulations to Dr. Jacqueline Chen, Associate Professor of Social Psychology at the The University of Utah, on receiving the inaugural FABBS Kellina Craig-Henderson Award for Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA Award). ๐
Dr. Chenโs research explores how people perceive and behave toward outgroup members and how to promote understanding of diverse intergroup interactions. She is the principal investigator of the Social Cognition and Intergroup Perception (SCIP) Laboratory, which uses social psychological methods to investigate topics related to intergroup relations and diversity. Dr. Chen and her collaborators established the American Multiracial Faces Database (AMFD), a database of multiracial face photos that provides behavioral science researchers with more diverse stimuli and increases the representation of multiracial individuals in research.

The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) Early Stage Investigators (ESI) Paper Competition awards recognize emerging scientists whose research reflect Dr. Matilda White Rileyโs vision of research excellence in health-related behavioral and social sciences. The article must be published or accepted and in-press between January 1 and December 31, 2023. The article must involve original research published in a peer-review journal. Up to 5 ESI awardees will be invited to present the findings from their accepted paper and participate in a moderated discussion of future research possibilities during the event. FABBS is saddened to learn of the passing of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. She will be remembered for being a pioneering leader in her public service roles and a tremendous champion for science.
Chairwoman Johnson, often referred to as EBJ, was a pioneering leader in numerous public service roles. She was the first registered nurse to serve in Congress, and the first African American, and first woman, to chair the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology โ with jurisdiction over the National Science Foundation (NSF), a primary federal funder of behavioral and brain sciences. FABBS is saddened to learn of the passing of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. She will be remembered for being a pioneering leader in her public service roles and a tremendous champion for science.

Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Dr. James Jones, University of Delaware, on receiving the inaugural FABBS Lifetime Achievement Award for Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA Award). ๐
Dr. Jones is known for his conceptual contributions to our early understanding of racism and its psychological consequences in the lives of people of African descent. Dr. Jones' classic book, Prejudice and Racism, has been extensively used in university courses on prejudice and racism.
Dr. Jones has received numerous accolades and honors throughout his long and distinguished career and has also recently been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his distinguished original research. Dr. Jonesโ leadership roles include President of SPSSI, Director of the American Psychological Association APA Minority Fellowship Program, and more.
