No. 5 - The Yellowhammer Sweater

Our beloved state bird of Alabama consistently appears in the collection in subtle ways. As creatives, inspiration will strike without warning and oftentimes in ways unexpected. Ellie, on our design team, rendered a spontaneous sketch in sharpie on a T-shirt from the office- it didn’t take much time for it to evolve from there.

“What I really love about this design is how the artwork is knit into the sweater. The way these are made is very thoughtful of trying to get as much details in the artwork as possible while keeping the weight of the garment light and comfortable. The detailed intarsia jacquard technique uses multiple colors, balancing yarn weight to keep the garment light and comfortable. It turned out to be something we are really proud of, thanks to its artistic impact and technical craftsmanship.” - Ellie

As for Billy, our friends Jack and Judy were kind enough to stop by the studio and sport this special piece.

“Judy has been the spirit messenger of the Muscle Shoals music legacy. Her long time marriage to founding member of The Swampers, legendary bassist David Hood, has given her rare insight to the history of the recording scene in our area- She’s been a true rockstar!” - Billy

No. 4 - The Shadow Plaid Archie Jacket

Our beloved Archie Jacket has seen many variations of prints, colors, and textures. Although true, this diversity has never lessened its consistency. Our relaxed shoulder and unstructured blazer is a constant in the collection. It’s a versatile piece that is easy to dress up or wear casually, and this anniversary season’s fabrics help provide great options for your closet.

“My long time neighbor and dear friend John Paul White is an uber talented multi Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, producer and co-founder of Indie record label Single Lock Records. He wears his accomplishments with modesty and grace, which is something I’ve always respected about him. A long time muse of mine here in the Shoals, he just keeps getting better and keeps wearing the collection like a badass!”

One of the most meaningful parts of the last 20 years at Billy Reid are the relationships we make with fellow businesses and creatives along the way.

With this is mind, we are looking back on our hangout with Austin-based fabric artists, Fort Lonesome. Utilizing their specialized chain stitch embroidery skills and personalizing some of our favorite garments, we created one-of-a-kind pieces for several performers, friends, and influencers on-site at the NewPort Folk Fest.

From the Archives, Spring 2018

Reminiscing on an approach to showcase our Spring collection in a new, yet seemingly familiar way. Inspired by the idea of hosting a cocktail party, the team made mannequins using fun found objects- old shirt snaps, copper pennies, and even moss- to give the look of an “on-body visual” without disrupting the Frank Lloyd Wright - Rosenbaum house and maintaining its form as a museum. Highlighting the structural and decorative beauty of the historic Rosenbaum house, the looks help articulate the cocktail party vibe that our team had envisioned its guests attending while wearing the Spring collection. This part of history is still actively a museum, and is admired and cherished by Florence locals and visitors alike.

No. 3 - The Quail Jacket

We’re thrilled to bring back a beloved classic from the early days of Billy Reid: the Quail Jacket.

This sturdy, oversized coat is your go-to layer when the chill sets in. Whether you’re throwing it over a suit or a thick sweater, it’s got you covered. Made from Halley Stevensons fabric with a wax finish, it’s designed to keep you protected from the elements—and built to last for generations.

Originally introduced in 2008 as a functional hunting jacket, the Quail Jacket featured waxed cotton, an action back, and an interior game pouch. It was made for the outdoors but quickly became a streetwear staple. Now, it’s back with updated details and lightweight, water-resistant waxed cotton, ready to be a team favorite all over again.

UNCF x Birmingham Walk for Education —

Mark your calendar for two important events this week.

On Thursday, August 22nd from 3-6pm, we’re having our friends by the Birmingham shop for some refreshments and to unveil the limited edition tees we’ve made for Saturday’s walk. 100% of proceeds from shirt sales will go to supporting UNCF. This isn’t your typical local fun-run shirt either. We’re putting all our custom craftsmanship into these shirts—drawing inspiration from Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ rich tradition of marching bands and the drum majors that lead them.

Then come join us on August 24th for the UNCF-Birmingham’s Walk for Education. Billy Reid has been a longtime supporter of the UNCF’s mission. Lace up your shoes and meet us at Railroad Park to register at 7:00 am.

See y’all there!

Home is everything to Drew and Ellie Holcomb. It’s a place to put their feet up, hang out with family and friends, and get some much needed R&R in between tour dates.

Their Nashville space also doubles as an archive of memories, in the form of old tour posters, art they collected while abroad, and souvenirs from family trips.

“My dad had this thing when we would travel where he would give us a budget for trinkets,” says Drew. “He would always encourage us to buy something ‘real.’ So when I was eight years old, I bought a real tomahawk in Mesa Verde. I still have it!”

We take pride in our favorite pieces, with the hope that one day they’ll become an heirloom garment.

For the Holcombs, they work both on the road between shows or working on the next project at home. The dedicated craftsmanship in these jackets will hold up over years of use, no matter where you take them.
