Church of the Brethren Office of Peacebuilding and Policy Nathan Hosler
These two photos, taken in the past week by members of our church, show the juxtaposition of the time we're living in now.
As we celebrate the bounty of the earth with beautiful figs from our church's fig tree, we also remember our sisters and brothers in the Middle East who are suffering. We love and stand with Palestine as they continue to fight for peace. We wish for a ceasefire so that all can be safe in the Israel/Palestine conflict. We don't wish for anyone to suffer or experience violence.
It's so complicated. But we know that God is with us - and God is with you.
In the midst of all that's happening in the world, God still feeds us. God still cares. God still provides.
TONIGHT!
Jennifer Hosler

Our pastor, Rev. Dr. Jennifer Hosler, shared about our church's work with the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid, welcoming migrants bused from the southern border to Washington, DC. Mutual aid values "solidarity, not charity," and seeks to build alternative structures and systems for meeting all of our neighbors' needs. Jenn was asked to share about mutual aid and the ways faith communities can learn from and partner with mutual aid groups.
Pastor Nathan Hosler shared powerful words from his recent trip to Palestine this past Sunday! You don't want to miss it! Catch his sermon here:

The Holy Spirit came.
Thanks be to God
Acts 2:2-4
2 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
John 16:33 ~ I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
This past Sunday, our Pastor Jennifer Hosler, Ph.d, shared a powerful Word from the Lord entitled "Welcomed to the Family of God, Without Discrimination"
"We as a church have asked ourselves, is there anyone here who would withhold baptism or membership or communion or leadership from sincere followers of Jesus? We have said, “no” to withholding and “yes!” to full inclusion in all aspects of church life, ministry, and ordinances. Like the early church in Acts, we too get to participate in wonder and gratitude that the Holy Spirit fills and works through all people, without partiality, including our Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Q***r, and other siblings in Christ. Thanks be to God. "
Welcome to God's Family!
Welcome to community!
Welcome Home.
Good Afternoon WCCOB Family and Friends:
Here's a sermon excerpt from one of our Pastors Nate Hosler: he reminds us to stay connected to God and one another as we continue to fight for our sisters and brothers who are facing bombs and violence everyday. From Washington DC to Palestine, may God abide in all of us.
Abide.
The First Nations Translation uses “stay joined.”
In this version, verse 5 reads, “I am the vine and you are the branches. The ones who stay joined with me will grow much fruit. For without me nothing grows.”
Abide with God. Abide in community. Stay joined. Our fellow sojourners may not be immediately obvious. Community may not automatically happen. The centrifugal forces of isolation, busyness, discord, and weariness often pull us from the center, which is God—the source of life. These forces often pull us from the community which we need to thrive.
The early community extended to include the Ethiopian eu**ch.
This new follower of Jesus then was baptized as a visible sign and entry into the community of Jesus and life of God.
And we abide with God and our fellow travelers—staying joined, remaining connected to the vine that is Jesus.
Abiding is intentional and active. Both with God and with our fellow travelers. Abide with God. Abide with Jesus, the true vine."

Our observances for Palm Sunday included this video of Christians in Gaza celebrating Palm Sunday last year (2023). St. Porphyrius Church, where Christians were sheltering, has since been bombed and destroyed. At least 16 people were killed in the bombing in October.

Grateful for the witness and writing of our dear sibling in Christ Dana Cassell. Thank you for seeing the work of our tiny congregation. Check out her blog post here:
we are people of god's peace Last Sunday, I preached a sermon with the people of the Washington City Church of the Brethren, on Capitol Hill. After worship, we had a delicious potluck (venison shepherd’s pie!) and then my friend Jenn, one of the pastors, asked for some help tidying up the fellowship hall.
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death." —“Beyond Vietnam” (April 1967)
Will the sermon feature a LEGO octopus? Maybe! Join us for worship this Sunday as we welcome Dana Cassell to preach at our 11am worship service. Stay after for a potluck.

Read Pastor Jennifer Hosler's sermon from the 2nd Sunday of Advent, December 10th. Mary the expectant mother of Jesus sang, "God is scattering the proud and arrogant. God is casting down the powerful and lifting up the powerless. God is filling up the hungry with nourishing food, while sending the rich away empty-handed." Are our Advent and Christmas observances shaped by the Magnificat (Mary's song)? If God is scattering the proud, the arrogant, casting down the powerful and lifting up the powerless, filling up the hungry with food and sending the rich away empty-handed, where will we be amidst that divine revolution? How can we walk through Christmas shaped by the Magnificat, in solidarity with the grieving, the sick, the hungry, the people overwhelmed by war? Sisters and brothers, siblings in Christ, let us look for God to speak through the voices we do not expect. AMEN.
