The United States is on track toward welcoming 100,000 arrivals in Fiscal Year 2024 — the highest number of arrivals in three decades. While we commend the President Joe Biden Administration's innovations to rebuild the US Refugee Admissions Program, these innovations must be made sustainable through congressional investments and the White House’s commitment to continue strengthening our public/private partnership.
For the first 3 quarters of FY24 (Oct 1, 2023-June 30, 2024) the US resettled 68,291 refugees from 81 countries. This included: 25,431 from Africa, 5,202 from East Asia, 2,658 from Europe & Central Asia, 13,822 from Latin America/Caribbean, and 21,178 from Near East/South Asia. Texas, California, New York, Pennsylvania and Florida are the top states welcoming people seeking safety during the third quarter of FY24.
The majority of arrivals came from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, and Burma. This is the first year that an administration has provided a range for each regional allocation. As the year progresses, advocates will track how these ranges impact overseas processing.

Nejra Sumic, Refugee Congress Delegate for Arizona and National Field Manager for We Are All America, gave an interview with BBC News on World Refugee Day. “The United States is a welcoming country,” she said. “The United States has done very well in welcoming those who have been forcibly displaced; however, there are still things that the Administration can do to speed up the family reunification process in order to bring families together.”
