Sculpture 🤝 garden
This site of a former nursery in Amagansett, NY is now a two-acre retreat for two art collectors and their family. Carefully placed sculpture, allows for interplay of garden and art throughout the property. This large- scale sculpture nestled in the garden is by Japanese sculpture Jun Kaneko.

This ultimate seaside garden sits on approximately one acre and juts perilously into Long Island Sound. Planted with native species and tough shrubs that stand up to brutal winds and driving surf, these gardens surround a house that dates from the 19th-century, when it was a Victorian Cottage. Large slabs of locally quarried granite form the terrace of the tidal pool-inspired elliptical swimming pool, while stone piers hold up a timber frame cypress arbor that provides shade and protection from the sun and wind.

We recently gathered out of the office for our annual Founders' Day event where we celebrate and honor OvS' founding principals, Jim van Sweden and Wolfgang Oehme by serving the community by spending a day volunteering in a garden space. This year we had the pleasure of working with the incredible and knowledgeable team at . After, we enjoyed a delicious lunch followed by a strawberry dessert - Wolfgang's favorite!🎥: Lili Herrera, OvS Principal

OvS was honored to receive a Merit Award in Residential Design from the Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for our work at Basil Green, a Mediterranean-inspired “White Garden” on a hillside in McLean, Virginia. Achillea millefolium ‘New Vintage White’ (yarrow), Anemone x hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ (windflower) and Baptisia alba (white wild indigo) are some of the white-flowering species in the garden.

We spent last Friday at Oak Spring, in Upperville. This garden is very important to us as we have spent many hours, in partnership with Oak Spring Garden Foundation , preparing the “Little Oak Spring Landscape Report” which details the historical, cultural and horticultural development of Rachel “Bunny” Mellon’s Little Oak Spring.

To be part of the OvS team is to be part of a family that extends for generations (really). Once you’ve worked inside these hallowed bank building walls, you’ve joined ranks with some pretty esteemed company, some who still work here and others who have moved on. We’re an elite class but our commitment to community, good design and horticulture is unrivaled.
There are a lot of special places and people in this world, but we wouldn’t trade our OvS family.
Did you know that some trees have knees? We are focusing on a unique tree for World Landscape Architecture month: Taxodium distichum, bald cypress. Here is one that lives in the pond at the Science Center at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The trees "knees" are woody growths that begin to develop with the tree stands in wet conditions. They are not fully understood yet, but they are believed to serve multiple purposes: from providing stability and strength to facilitating air exchange for submerged roots.

Where do you find inspiration? Our colleague, Jung, is never without his sketch pad. His insight and ability to capture inspiration with a flourish of a pen is enviable.
The Green Roof at Chicago Botanic Garden's Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Conservation Science Center is the nexus for the Garden’s plant conservation efforts. The five-acre site was conceived as a model sustainable system. The 38,000-square foot building is elevated on pylons and allows the entire site—called the Rainwater Glen—to act as a bioswale. It also features a 16,000 square foot research and display green roof. Excess rainwater not absorbed by the roof flows through the building and is released into the landscape below. Combined with surface run-off, the Glen treats 96% of the rainwater events before releasing the cleansed water into the Garden’s lake and lagoon system. 📷: Robin Carlson
A great park brings life to a community. OvS has had the privilege of designing one of the great parks of New York City and in doing so, provided the southern tip of Manhattan with a place to bask, run, play and explore along the Hudson River. Nelson A. Rockefeller Park, built on landfill adjacent to the Hudson River, is the largest public open space in Battery Park City. The park’s framework of stone walls and cobble pavements are reminiscent of Central Park and the fully accessible grounds accommodate a variety of active and passive recreational uses. An upper level terrace features sitting areas, ball courts, plantings and a large lily pond. A lower level terrace has playing fields, meadow plantings, paths and jogging trails that overlook the river. The low-maintenance plant palette provides year-round interest and respects both the native Hudson River Valley landscape and the Long Island shoreline beach environment.

Today World Landscape Architecture Day is celebrating Community Impact. This year we had the opportunity to collaborate with local businesses and partners to put on a wonderful Park(ing) Day - a "global, public, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people." - www.myparkingday.org.🎥: Taoti Creative
A day in the life of a Landscape Architect can be different one day to the next. A planting day out in the field is always our favorite kind of day. One of the hallmarks of OvS is our “boots on the ground” approach. We never shy from getting dirty and we love being out in the field.
It is "Pollinator Places" Day for World Landscape Architecture Month. We strive to design gardens that include biodiverse and native species that support a variety of insects and animals including pollinators.📷: Marisa Scalera
