We wanted to take a moment to wish each one of you a Happy Independence Day! It is a time to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and must defend, our achievements, our journey so far as a nation of nations, and to look forward with hope for the road ahead. We leave you with these thoughts of those before us:
“Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt
“Surely, in the light of history, it is more intelligent to hope rather than to fear, to try rather than not to try. For one thing we know beyond all doubt: Nothing has ever been achieved by the person who says, ‘It can’t be done.’” — Eleanor Roosevelt
The privileges and values that make our country strong will be intertied only if this remains the home of the brave not of the fearful. We wish you and yours a safe and happy July 4th!

🔜 COMING UP SOON IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
🇷🇴 Romanian Weekend at the Wharf, the landmark of Romanian cultural presences in America, returns to Washington, D.C. for its third edition!
In only three years since its launching in 2022 as a joint initiative of Ambasada României în Statele Unite ale Americii / Romanian Embassy to US and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, “The Romanian Weekend at The Wharf” has reinvented the Romanian public and cultural diplomacy of Romania in the United States. Massive in scale, with an ingenious programming, this tumultuous, diverse, and participatory festival has grown year after year to become not only the milestone of Romanian cultural presence in America but also one of the most entertaining events of the D.C. summer.
With three days of non-stop music, traditional crafts demonstrations, literary performances, wine & food sampling, temporary exhibitions, and interactive activities, the festival literally takes over The Wharf, the popular Washington esplanade by the Potomac, offering the irresistible context for an all-encompassing experience of cultural discoveries and cementing the Romanian-American friendship. “The Romanian Weekend at The Wharf” is initiated, co-organized and co-financed by Ambasada României în Statele Unite ale Americii / Romanian Embassy to US and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, with the support of the Maramureș County Council and numerous partners, collaborators, and friends from both sides of the Atlantic.

A returning speaker in our annual conference, EURAXESS North America Regional Coordinator Jackson Howard, will present on Dec. 15th the common platform hosted by the European Union’s Delegation in Washington designed to coordinate interaction with the scientific diasporas of all member states. He will reiterate the various opportunities dedicated to both US and Canadian-based researchers, especially the grant applications for Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions and other opportunities funded by the European Research Council. This platform dedicated to international research funding at a European level, seeks to facilitate the linking of researchers in North American and Europe by centering on scientific diaspora members as natural stakeholders in the dissemination of funding opportunities and information on research career development through transnational mobility.
This is a most authentic and touching message of cultural identity affirmation from the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas. The sentiment is mutual from all Romanian Americans! It is inspiring to see it play out in public service...

Happy Mărțișor! May the reenactment of this ancestral tradition of reveling in the joy of nature’s rebirth, fertility and celebration of women, remain in our lives as a discreet little joy we share with those we esteem as a totem of our ritualized affection and solidarity. Our adoptive nation has found different ways of committing these universal sentiments to paper. Last night, President Biden continued a White House tradition initiated since 1995 of issuing A Proclamation on Women’s History Month 2023. Initiated by President Carter’s first proclamation of Women’s History Week in 1981, this American tradition was elevated by the US Congress in 1987 into a month dedicated to celebrating women’s contributions to American society. This year’s theme is that of “celebrating the women who help tell our stories.” For the past few years IRF has held public events dedicated to highlighting the contributions of outstanding Romanian American women, trailblazers who left their mark on both Romanian and American societies. This year, we ask those interested in sharing their immigration experience to share with us stories that affirm and acknowledge women mentors. Tell us who helped you personally tell your story or pursue your dreams and potential. We would be honored to collect these oral testimonies, so please contact us sending your entry for a woman you wish to lift up and praise. Your messages will be made publicly available. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/02/28/a-proclamation-on-womens-history-month-2023/
