OH, just curling up to finish reading my bestie’s NEW AWESOME book, The Beginner’s Guide to the Eight Extraordinary Vessels!
I’m so grateful to have had Dolma Johanison as my teacher in grad school in school, super honored to call her one of my closest friends now and so thrilled and proud to see her publish her first book written on using the 8x vessels for Acupuncture treatment.
For non acus, the 8x vessels are deeper and wider reservoirs than the regular primary channels that are most commonly used. Instead of being based on organ systems, they cover larger swaths of the body and therefore are applicable to a wide range of seemingly disparate areas and concerns.
I find that common applications for using these pathways include treating trauma, fertility, genetic issues and complex issues involving mind/body/spirit. But the applications are limitless and the more you get to know the 8x the more you realize their deep power. High recommend this book if you’re an acupuncturist or student or if you’re just curious about digging in. Can be purchased via , link in my stories.
I also got to write an endorsement on the back of the book - my claim to fame 😉
" This engaging clinical guide is clear, concise, and complete yet also rich, comprehensive, and profound. Dolma captures the esoteric while keeping it user friendly and accessible. This book will serve as a valuable and thorough resource for acupuncturists throughout their career. "
Love this insight from . Give a heart if you can relate to the value gained in the healing process.
Immunity isn’t a stand alone metric- it’s a system of relationships in Chinese Medicine. Initially, your lung health, digestive health, fluid physiology and the yang aspect of your kidney system are all implicated. Once you are actively fighting a pathogen, your resilience is related to the overall strength of your QI as well as the *absence of complicating factors such as disharmonies of phlegm, heat, stagnation etc, which we might call risk factors or comorbidities.
If you already have an existing TCM diagnosis of dampness and blood stagnation for ex, that will create an environment where certain pathogens thrive. So in order to protect yourself, we work on clearing those risk factors!
More simply, the whole picture includes the pathogen, your immune system and your terrain or the unique ecosystem of your body. This is why we each respond differently to the same pathogen. A one dimensional approach against the pathogen would be unwise or at least remiss.
We are not machines. Living systems cannot be reduced to their parts, only understood through their connections, patterns and always, in relationship to the WHOLE picture.
Do you feel like we might be missing something?
“It should be obvious that this crisis cannot be solved with the same methods that got us into it in the first place.” Greta Thunberg on COP26 and the climate crisis. She’s right and it IS obvious. But obvious and put in to action are different things.
It hit me deeply because this statement could not be more applicable to the crisis of chronic disease in our country. Yet, somehow it is 100% normalized that the answer to any number of lifestyle induced chronic diseases is to take a pharmaceutical drug for the rest of your life as to manage one lab value- without changing anything else. Nothing corrective. Just go back to what you were doing! That’s the standard. And it’s not working.
I know Acupuncture or Chinese Medicine is a stretch for many mainstream people (I actually think much of it is rooted in Western superiority and prejudice).. But isn’t it even more baffling to accept this status quo of collecting drugs to take as you age thinking that makes you *healthier? Not reflecting on the WHY at all?
So, how is this the case? Here are some of my broad theories:
💰Corporate interests/ Big Industry influence (are you watching Dopesick?)
☯️The healing path takes time, commitment. It’s certainly easier to stay in your comfort zone. Some legitimatley cannot afford the time or expense to make any changes
🤖Since the Machine Age, we have come to view our bodies as machines rather than gardens, favor mechanized reductionist approaches vs comprehensive ones.
🚖As machines, we get treated like cars. Healing, per se, is not ‘medical’ but woo woo, especially because it’s less measurable. We like outsourcing the work.
These are the things I think a lot about. 🤓 But have you ever thought of this? Drop a 💯if you do. And please do share your thoughts as to how we got here if you have more ideas .
Happy Harvest Moon and Fall Equinox~
Autumn represents the pivot between the final culmination of the growing season and the beginning of the descent in to the depths of Winter.
Autumn is associated with the natural element of METAL. All the five elements are represented in Nature, including US. The cycles of the seasons color our experiences of life in phases similar to the day night cycle. The organ systems that are related to Autumn are the Lungs and the large intestine, as these are resonant with the season’s energetics. Embodied, they relate to immunity, breathing, elimination , gut health and skin health. Metaphysically, they relate to inspiration, respect, grief, letting go, clearing debris, preciousness, death, brittleness, gratitude. This is how Chinese Medicine can simultaneously treat stuck grief and asthma 🪄
Tuning in to your body this season, you may notice a pausing from the playfulness of summer to a slower sense of reverence. There is the balance between the changing leaves and dying wildlife to the precious bounties of harvest. Gratitude and loss paired. This is the most spiritual time of year as the first colder winds blow in and the nights are darkened for longer. The existential question of the season is what is precious and what do you need to let go of - -
Here are three tips of the season-
🙏🏽GRATITUDE - It’s the time to take stock and be thankful for what your blessings and generously give to those in need. Taking even a moment to give thanks for your nourishment has been proven to allow for better digestion.
🍂LETTING GO- This includes literal waste in your gut, stale air in your lungs, toxic thoughts or bitterness, even Marie Kondo’ing your home. This creates space to allow new things to enter.
🍐NOURISHING DRYNESS- The lungs and large intestine need moistening foods to thrive in the dryer months ahead so as it cools down, seek out brothy soups, fibrous veggies, cooked root veggies, pears, seeds and of course pumpkins.
Schedule a tune up to help attune and transition to the season. There is much to be thankful for and also to let go of in this second pandemic Autumn of ours.

How Tom Brady Uses TCM to Improve Performance Tom Brady embraces multiple aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine to optimize his performance - here's what he has to say about the power of holistic medicine.
Do you feel like you’re always rushing, absorbing stress along the way and holding it in until something reaches a breaking point?
Are you an internalizer who is always pretending everything is OK and then numbing stress out with treats, wine, distraction or dissociating from your body? Have you lost connection with your body entirely?
May be you can relate to all of the above. I can and I think most people can.
Stress happens. If we have tools and practices to stay conscious of how we’re responding and how we’re affected, we can let ourselves unravel those coping mechanisms and find equilibrium again. Over time, this MATTERS. Your body is asking you to pay attention when it acts up. This data is not to be ignored.
When I see patients who have been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition or who have struggled with chronic illness for a long time, I always ask what type of circumstances preceded that event. Always, there is a stressful precursor that went unprocessed and unchecked, which overwhelmed homeostasis. We don’t have to fight this, we can play along, adapt, harmonize.
If you feel this is you, there are tools to live a more conscious and integrated life. You don’t have to stay in this loop forever.
Learning to be embodied and learning to let go are the most important skills you could learn in your life.
