Join us tonight for the 16th Annual Capitol Hill Christmas Tree Lighting! Our “Men in Blue” will serve hot chocolate and doughnuts while local musical groups Joyous Voices, Adalia Jimenez, Washington Youth Choir, and Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s Suzuki Strings perform your favorite holiday carols!

All festivities will be held at the tree nicknamed "Sonny" in the SW Quadrant of Eastern Market Metro Plaza (Corner of 7th and D St SE). Members of the Didden family will flip the switch to illuminate the tree that was planted to honor the late George Didden III for his many contributions to the Capitol Hill community.

This year’s very special guest Masters of Ceremonies will be Kojo Nnamdi, host of The Politics Hour on WAMU and former host of The Kojo Nnamdi Show, and Tom Sherwood, resident Political Analyst at WAMU 88.5 FM Politics Hour.

New this year, a special programmed light show with music, presented in partnership with Barracks Row Main Street and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), will be debuted at the event and play throughout December.

You’re invited to SHORTidotes, a short film series presented by Salym Fayad celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The event will take place on Monday, September 19 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th Street SE.

Part 2 of the project Artidotes 2.0: An Explosion of Color by artist Carolina Mayorga, this event will showcase a selection of short films from Latin America and Africa on identity and belonging through science fiction, traditional music, and documentary. The films feature a cross-continental audiovisual dialogue, from Colombia’s Caribbean and Pacific coasts to the Moroccan desert and urban landscapes of Switzerland and the United States. There will be a short Q&A session following the film series and panel discussion with Karent Hinestroza, Palesa Letlaka, and Manual Mendez.

We will be announcing a rabbit naming contest open to all DC children 12 and under for the three giant, metal rabbit sculptures, located near the intersection of 9th Street and Penn Ave, SE.
