Remembering the legendary James Dean, who passed away on this day in 1955 at age 24.

Dean was traveling in his Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed "Little Bastard," en route to a race. He had traded in his 356 Speedster for it less than two weeks prior. While traveling on present day CA route 46 (then 466) near Cholame, a college student returning home for the weekend in a Ford Tudor made a left turn in front of Dean's Spyder. Sun glare at that time of day, combined with the light color of the Porsche, are often attributed to why the other driver didn't see the oncoming car before making the turn.

Despite reports that Dean had been speeding earlier in the day, police on the scene said he was most likely going 55 mph at the time of the accident. There is now a memorial marker honoring the iconic actor near the site.
