Looking Back / Taking Stock -
Looking Back / Taking Stock - You Can Still Support PYA in 2022! After many years of planning and fundraising, Project YES Africa (PYA) will soon realize one of its longstanding goals: the rebuild of the Nokwanda Educare Centre, a crèche (or pre-school) in Khayelitsha, the fastest growing township in South Africa. The modern, two-story, eco-friendly facility is ...
When Blessings Flow!
In the fall of 2022, The Brand Development Group(BDG), an Atlanta based Marketing and Public Relations Company met with a Project YES Africa (PYA) board member to learn more about the organization. The Senior Managing Partner Jodi Covington was particularly interested in the school that PYA is building in South Africa and was curious as to what led the team to take on such a large endeavor. After listening to a Zoom presentation and hearing the story, Jodi and her team were so moved that they wanted to help in any way possible.
Collectively, BDG decided they would bring PYA on as their first ProBono client. The firm has been working in the background to help get the word out about Project YES Africa.
On December 14, BDG issued a Press Release on behalf of Project YES Africa and the work we are doing in Khaylitshia. They also highlighted the recent recognition our organization received from the Atlanta Falcons #47 Arnold Ebiketie and his decision to select PYA for his My Cause My Cleats , a National Football League initiative.

When Teachers Lead, Children Lead: the Power of Affirmation
When the children of Nokwanda Community Educare Centre, in Khayelitsha, speak, it’s clear that the influences of their parents and teachers have played a vital role in helping them build self-confidence and self-esteem. Parents are the first people in a child’s life to offer advice and encouragement, so they set the standard. Then the teacher’s affirmations and positive words further help the children build confidence in themselves and teaches them to overcome challenges and solve problems.
“Good day parents.
Good day teachers.
My name is Likhanye.
My surname is Siyo.
I am 5 years old.
My teacher’s name is Ms. Mvana
“When I grow up, I want to be a Traffic Officer.”
On Michelle Riley Jones recent visit to the centre, the children were participating in a dress rehearsal for their upcoming graduation. The building, being funded by Project YES Africa, is still under construction, however, the bright smiles and excitement of the children, illuminated the room of gray plastered walls. She was delighted to host special guest, Councillor Murabunga, from the City of Cape Town, for the afternoon activity, so that he could see the progress of the rebuild of the centre, and celebrate the accomplishments of the children.
Director Nomthandazo Nokwanda Mvana and the teachers organized the children and had them march in and take their seats. The teachers led off with a celebratory song and dance, along with introductory remarks. Michelle even joined in on the dance! Then the children sang songs, and each child was called forward to give a short presentation. To introduce the children, instead of generic comments, the teachers gave very specific praise and targeted encouragement to each of them. The children beamed as the teachers highlighted their individual actions and the great things that they were able to learn and accomplish at the centre. Five year-old Likhanye, and each child who stepped forward, boldly introduced themselves and expressed their dreams for their own future.
“Shine, Nokwanda, Shine”
Through the teachers show of support by using encouraging words and actions, the children have learned that same behavior and repeat it to their classmates. Teachers and students alike collectively shout, “Shine, Nokwanda, Shine!” at the end of each child’s presentation.
The Nokwanda Community Educare Centre is building a foundation for strong leaders of the future for South Africa. When teachers lead, children lead. Director Mvana, the teachers and the students have helped create and sustain an all-around happier, kind, encouraging, and motivating learning environment. That’s the power of affirmation.
Kudos to the teachers, and congratulations to all the students on your upcoming graduation! Shine!!

As we enter this final quarter of 2022 we are so incredibly thankful to all of you who’ve encouraged and supported us on this journey to re-build the Nokwanda Educare Centre in Khaylitshia, South Africa.
In September, one of our board members paid a visit to the project and captured photos and did interviews with Director Nokwanda and members of the community. We launched our very first Go Fund Me campaign last evening and we included some of the videos and photos.
We invite you to take a listen to Ms Nokwanda and others talk about what this project means to them.

“If you build it they will come!”I don’t know who said those words but today I am here to repeat it.
We pledged to a school in Khaylitshia, Western Cape, Cape Town, SA that we would help them build a new school that would accommodate 100 school children.
After many setbacks (Les Brown says a Setback is a Setup for a Comeback)…the Comeback is on…Project YES Africa began building the school in July 2022.
COVID19 caused many disruptions in our lives and those of the people in South Africa as well. Because of the pandemic we had to put everything on hold until July 2022, when we poured the foundation. Well as with everything the cost of our construction increased and we have to continue raising funds to complete the project.
Check out our silent auction fundraiser currently running thru September 7th. This auction was curated by one of our board members and has a little something for everyone including jewelry, artworks, photography packages, picnic packages and more.
We would love your support. Thank you in advance and happy shopping!
