KUBE featured in the Washington Business Journal - “A recently sold home in Woodley Park has set an all-time record for the Northwest D.C. neighborhood.

One of the key selling points for the 5,500-square-foot, three-level 29th Place home is its setting on a hill, “allowing tremendous views and vistas” of the adjacent Massachusetts Avenue Heights community.

The home, which was placed under contract in four days and sold for its listed price, was acquired by its previous owners in December 2019 and completely renovated the next year by D.C.’s Kube Architecture and LJM Development.

The home includes six bedrooms, four full-baths and two half-baths, gourmet kitchen and main-level study, lower-level rec room, rear deck with grill and an attached one-car garage.”

Bourbon Archaeology | IN CONSTRUCTION

In this renovation, a previously under-utilized lower level was “reclaimed” as a series of new spaces. Salvaged wood from a dismantled Kentucky bourbon factory was carefully repurposed and crafted throughout the design. New spaces include a family lounge, gym, flex space, and guest bedroom suite. Through the process of excavation and discovery, unexpected elements emerged, such as concrete arches and concrete floors, both previously buried, and original solid wood joists hidden within a drywall ceiling.

Jane’s Garden | open house

Our client purchased the unit next door to expand her living space and to host visiting family and friends. She requested that the new space be open, bright and to feel like a garden. To accomplish this we introduced bright colors like various sky blues, sunset yellow and red. Most interior walls were removed in order to bring light into the space from front to back. The blue kitchen wall faces 5 sliding doors of various blue tones that separate the living area from the bedroom/den space. Tall storage cabinets, made of Ash, line a third wall. Areas for her growing collection of plants were created along the window wall

ARLINGTON CONDOS
Studies for new condominiums in Arlington. VA. All units have three bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths with parking. The owner requested that the units appear more as a single family home, rather than a multi-family development, given the nature of the neighborhood.
The front block has two side by side units and a third on top with a deck, while the fourth unit is a single three story tower. An enclosed breezeway acts as entry for the third top floor unit, and further defines the entry courtyard.

This new pool house is being added to a mid-century modern property in Silver Spring MD. - the goal is to “bring the party to the pool”. It will serve as a central gathering space for a close-knit family that has recently added young grandchildren. The structure includes a small kitchen and hangout area, with covered outdoor grilling space, and a 2-sided fireplace for cooler evenings. The flat roof, wood ceilings, and large overhangs relate to the design of the original house. There will also be an outdoor shower and changing area, and necessary storage. In addition, the structure will qualify as an ADU (accessory-dwelling unit), adding value to the property.

Lawrence Kitchen : A young family needed to renovate and expand their kitchen for their growing family. We pushed the narrow space outwards with a new wall of glass sliding doors to brighten the interior and connect the kitchen to the rear yard.

Light wood veneer and white cabinets (innately Italy) were selected to keep the space looking clean, bright and minimal. A light gray porcelain tile floor and white painted walls are complimented with LED strips which highlight the work areas.

Barkhaus is the DC metro area's first-ever dog bar and restaurant. The concept for Barkhaus was borne from an architecture design thesis by Alex Benbassat, a design associate at KUBE. Alex then joined forces with the KUBE team to bring the project to fruition. The various spaces at Barkhaus were designed to allow food, drinks and on/off-leash play to co-exist with dogs and their owners. The rigors of the city and state ordinances were deftly navigated in order to achieve this unique facility. The existing structure's interior was designed to blend the interior space with a modern take on an outdoor park. A wood and steel screen at entry filters light into the space as well as marking the intake and registration desk for guests. A green turf wall with the Barkhaus logo oversees the dining area, along with a service bar where fresh food and drinks are prepared in the full service kitchen above. An off-leash outdoor park area and upstairs private event space allow dogs to run and play freely.

This Bethesda renovation includes a new modern kitchen that opens up to the previously separated dining room. Windows were replaced with full-height glass, facing a beautiful view of the trees from the elevated site. Yellow cabinets and walls brighten up the space and act as a feature element for the fireplace in the living room, as well as the house entry. The primary bathroom was also renovated, with a new large shower and soaking tub, featuring blue glass tile, skylight, and clerestory windows.

This renovation of the entry lobby for an existing sacred building creates a space of warmth and welcome. The building serves a large, but closely-knit, religious community, and it is their “sacred home.” A curved wood wall and ceiling tie the space together, from end-to end, incorporating the reception desk and a display area for sacred relics. The glass entry vestibule is flanked by an art gallery on one side and a seating area with water wall on the other. The overall feeling is sculptural and organic, with earth-toned furniture and finishes, including “pebble” lights fabricated of hand-blown glass. The sound of water creates an atmosphere of solace, obscuring the sounds of the city outside.

WABI SABI - Tim's pad : The Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi encourages us to appreciate that nothing is truly perfect or permanent. This is an issue architects confront in any renovation project, especially within a minimal environment where every imperfection is visible. The owner of this three-story townhome in northern Virginia lives much of his life in Japan and has a love for Eastern minimalism. He wanted to strive for “perfection” within the renovation of his home, so the architects’ approach was to create minimal, modern forms that develop a clear order within the “imperfect” shell of the existing townhouse.

To this end all interior walls on the main level were removed and custom wood cabinetry inserted along the perimeter. While all the new millwork units work together, each also operates as a discreet prototypical element, housing storage, entertainment, kitchen, and a powder room. This approach allows for a space that is open and uncluttered, and the restrained pattern of light and dark tones feels tranquil and elegant. Shou sugi ban, traditional burnt wood from Japan, is hung on the ceiling marking the separation between cooking and living space. The design concept extends to the upper-level bedrooms, as well as the lower level entertainment space, with a bar, pool table, darts, and access to a private courtyard. The owner displays his Shochu collection (traditional Japanese liquor), making the bar a showpiece.

Rhode River Residence
This new ground-up house on the shore of the Rhode River near Annapolis will replace an outdated house that does not fit the clients’ needs. The new house will reflect its site, with large expanses of glass facing the water, and a sizable rear deck to enjoy the outdoors and entertain, with direct access to the water for boating and water sports. The new open plan will create a unified space for this tightly-knit family to gather, cook, celebrate holidays, and allow the grandchildren to run around and play. The massing consists of a charred wood (Shou Sugi Ban) base that supports a lightweight upper level. Feature wood walls wrap the entry, and reappear throughout the house in the kitchen, at the fireplace, and in the office - tying the house together visually. A geothermal mechanical system will be installed, as well as many other sustainable features (including an elevator for aging in place), for an efficient and resilient residence that will support the family for generations to come.
