Andes Amazon Fund is a multi-donor grantmaking initiative aiming to conserve the Amazon basin.
The Andes Amazon Fund (AAF) is a multi-donor grant-making initiative that supports the conservation of the Andes-Amazon of Peru and surrounding countries through the designation and effective management of protected areas and indigenous reserves. The Amazon headwaters are home to diverse ecosystems that are critical to global climate systems. AAF deploys three strategies that focus on both the sho
In Brazil’s State of Pará, a new, very special, protected area has been established, guarding some of the most majestic trees in the Amazon rainforest. 🌴
🌸 The Giant Trees of the Amazon State Park (Parque Estadual das Árvores Gigantes da Amazônia) spans 1,384,000 acres (560,000 hectares) and aims to protect a rare type of tropical forest with extremely tall trees (many over seventy meters tall) located in the area, one of which, an exemplar of Angelim Vermelho (Dinizia excelsa), is considered the tallest tree in the tropical Americas at a height of 290 feet (88.5 meters). These trees are unique; their carbon stock is equivalent to 500 average sized trees and their age may be somewhere between 400 to 600 years old according to researchers. 🛶
🌿 The new State Park contributes towards the improved protection of contiguous areas of high biological importance, strengthening the network of protected areas in the region.
⏩ The Giant Trees of the Amazon State park was established through the leadership and participation of the State Government of Pará Governo do Pará, the Institute for Forestry and Biodiversity Development in the State of Pará Ideflor-bio, the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Amapá Ifap - Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Amapá., and FAS - Fundação Amazônia Sustentável, with financial support from the Andes Amazon Fund.💚

🔥❌ Record-breaking fires are trampling through sensitive ecosystems across South America, threatening endangered biodiversity and creating dangerous levels of air pollution in cities like Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Pucallpa, Peru, Quito, Ecuador and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
🐆 Wildlife in the burned areas face the flames or become displaced, hindering their chances of survival.
🌤️ Fueled by a combination of high temperature and drought caused by the El Niño climate event that ended earlier this year and long term trends caused by climate change and deforestation, the fires have spread across millions of hectares and several Amazonian countries, threatening lives and property.
🌴 The creation of protected areas and indigenous reserves significantly reduces both deforestation and fire occurrence. We must work together to protect these areas.
⛑️ For those wanting to help the fire emergency across the region we share the name of a few of the organizations working diligently on local efforts to contain the reckless flames:
Perú por Naturaleza, Peru
Fundación Socioambiental Semilla, Bolivia
Fondo Ñeque, Ecuador
Fundo Casa Socioambiental, Brazil

🌿✨Andes Amazon Fund is Celebrating 10 Years! 🌟
It's hard to believe a decade has passed since we started our work to protect critical ecosystems! Over the last ten years, our support has enabled:
📍the protection of 195 new priority sites for biodiversity, climate, and people
🌳the safeguarding of 38 million acres (15 m ha)- 3x the size of Costa Rica!
🌿the strengthening of management across 121 million acres of recently-established conservation areas
🚰enhanced water security for 15 million people
These numbers are a testament to the hard work and collaboration of our 44 partner organizations across Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil, local and Indigenous communities, and governments in the region.
From protecting irreplaceable biodiversity and freshwater to supporting local communities and tackling deforestation, our impact is far-reaching. We've also helped our partners secure over $150 million in government funding to ensure the longevity of these efforts.
We're proud to be part of this journey towards a healthier Andes and Amazon, and none of this would be possible without our incredible donors and partners. Thank you for your support, and please join us as we enter the next decade of protecting the most biodiverse landscapes on Earth! 🌍

Ecuador's highest volcano, Chimborazo, soars to 20,549 ft. above sea level. Its glacial runoff empties into lush paramos, offering water for hundreds of thousands of people, and habitat for unique Andean flora and fauna.
🌱 It is here, in Ecuador’s central Bolivar province, that we find the newly created Bolivar Provincial Conservation and Sustainable Use Area.
🗻Spanning 105,978 acres, the new conservation area safeguards drinking water for over half a million people, while supporting sustainable development for local communities.
The process to create the Bolivar Provincial Conservation Area began in 2022. Local people, governments, and scientists, including those of our partner organization Ecopar/BYOS took notice of the growing threat of agricultural expansion in Bolivar. 🐄
An area equivalent to over 4,000 football fields of nature is lost annually in Bolivar due to human activities. The new conservation area promises to reverse that.
🤝Through implementing restoration initiatives, providing economic alternatives to local people, honoring traditional knowledge, and identifying key conservation areas, the province of Bolivar is setting its sights on a brighter future.
