Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation

The Foundation, founded in 1971, and incorporated in 1973, is an educational non-profit to promote the preservation of historic structures and related history.

It has been instrumental in locating, identifying and listing properties for its own landmark certification program as well as listing individual structures and districts on the National Register of Historic Places.

Since its inception, the Foundation has been successful in helping many historic home owners in the restoration of their properties. Advice and referral are only part of our mission.

In the 1970’s, at the urging of preservationists, our organization and its members worked diligently and eagerly to conduct a survey of early architecture found in our county. As a result of that compilation of information was born a 1976 Bicentennial publication - “Preserving Our Past: Landmark Architecture of Washington County, Pennsylvania.”

This 200-page hardbound book, printed in cooperation with the Bicentennial Commission of Pennsylvania, proved to be an important and successful educational tool. Public awareness was increased and interest expanded.

“Preserving Our Past,” with its more than 140 black-and-white photos, is rich in narrated history and photographic detail. It covers early log and stone construction through Victorian and Gothic-design, as well as a number of agricultural outbuildings.

While the original issue was sold out, a 1996 reprint is available for purchase. This includes note of several buildings lost to relocation, demolition or neglect.

In a further ongoing effort, a comprehensive Survey of Historic Structures was begun in 1995. This was made possible by funding from Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and private grants. A corps of trained volunteers adopted rural townships, photographing and recording data on historic homes and farmsteads. When compared with the earlier survey, it showed a loss of many important properties, thus emphasizing the importance of recording our architectural heritage.
