Some of you may know that my horse, Lucas, is also known as “Flukey Luke” (and was his show name for a short spell ☺️) This came up on YouTube!! The lyrics actually fit him, too 😂 Irene Bechtel Odessa Thacker Ellie Owens
This is our Horse of the Month, Lucas, enjoying his evening alfalfa…despite not having any front teeth! Lucas has a condition called EOTRH - Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption & Hypercementosis. That’s quite the mouthful!
🐴 EOTRH is a syndrome in older horses resulting in disease and destruction of incisors and canine teeth, and sometimes cheek teeth.
🐴 As such, Lucas has had his front teeth extracted by our amazing equine dentist, Jeremy Chenoweth and his team over time. He is still able to eat by using his gums to grab grass, hay, and his favorite - alfalfa 😋
🐴 And don’t fear, we have the teeth! 😂 Check out photo number 3 to see a comparison of a human tooth surrounded by horse teeth for size reference!
Today we celebrate all the different types of mamas out there…and the moms we hold in our hearts. Did you know have two sets of mother/child horses here at the farm!? Savvie is Sergeant’s mom and Opal is Ebony’s mom!
Let’s meet ✨Lucas✨
🐴Lucas is half thoroughbred and half Hanoverian
and is 27 years young!
🐴Lucas and Vanessa first met in 2010 in Virginia and was the first horse she ever bought on her own.
🐴Due to a variety of ailments, Lucas “retired” for about 8 years. (More on that later)
🐴He moved from Virginia and reunited with Vanessa again in 2018.
🐴Vanessa soon realized that Lucas wanted to work and loved being ridden.
🐴Lucas has now become an integral member or our equine therapy & activities team!
May’s Horse of the Month (HOTM) is….drumroll please….Lucas! He has been an integral part of our equine program. We will be telling you his origin story and all about his cute personality in the coming days!
Happy Birthday to our fearless leader and founder - Vanessa!! Her passion and love for animals is evident in everything she does. She is also the most kind, compassionate and funny woman, mom, wife, daughter, sister, teacher and friend anyone could ever ask for. We are all so blessed to know her.
The Weekend of Tiago continues…when Tiago isn’t helping with one of our programs or working on his tricks, he likes to hang out with his best friend Jax. More in stories!!
Let’s kick off the weekend with more Tiago! AKA April’s Horse of the Month. Go check out our stories for some of Tiago’s tricks! 🪄
The first Spring Clean this past Sunday was a huge success!! THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers who braved the icky weather. We got more done than we could have imagined! It was awesome to have everyone together at the farm :)
It’s Earth Day! We invest in our planet by reusing and repurposing things as much as we can! That’s why we love Cinnamon, the “horse” that guards our entrance and welcomes you to the farm. Cinnamon is made completely from reclaimed tires! He comes to us from the inspiring MrTani's World of Tire Yard Art who is helping the earth one quirky beautiful piece of Lawn Decor at a time! Share your favorite repurposed item with us in the comments!
