Our list of influential women in healthcare brings us right to today with Dr. Ardis Dee Hoven. After receiving her medial degree in 1970, Dr. Hoven became inspired to improve Americans’ access to healthcare during the AIDS epidemic in the 80s. Her desire to expand health access and serve her community led her down a path of organized medical leadership.

Virginia Apgar blazed a trail in healthcare in the mid-1900s. She had fought through the Great Depression to graduate fourth from her class at Columbia in 1933. While continuing her education with a mentor, he acknowledged the thoughtful and determined student and encouraged her to study anesthesiology as he thought the field needed vast improvements. This is when she developed the Apgar Score, an evaluation method measuring heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle, reflex, and color to determine newborns’ overall health. Virginia went on to study the prevention of birth defects. She was won multiple awards to her work in healthcare.

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker graduated from medical school in 1855. When the Civil war broke out, her drive to help led her to Washington where she intended to be a medical officer. Denied and shuffled to a more “appropriate role” for a woman, she became a volunteer nurse, still determined to help. Her work was recognized as a surgeon, and she eventually became the first female U.S. Army surgeon. This took her across battle fields and enemy lines until captured by Confederate Soldiers and held as a POW.

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a loud advocate for women’s rights and the first woman granted a Medal of Honor for her work, bravery and safe return.

In 1864, Rebecca Lee Crumpler graduated from the New England Female Medical College as the first Black woman to become a doctor.

Her legacy includes education in the health field, training over 100 anesthesiologists, but she spent most of her career caring for Black mothers and children who were poor and/or had been denied medical care.

Historians believe Rebecca had no idea she was the first African American woman to become a doctor in the United States during her lifetime.

At age 24, Elizabeth was inspired to enter the medical field when her close friend died of Uterine Cancer, claiming to have suffered at the hands of male Doctors.

Rejection after rejection led Elizabeth to Geneva College where she graduated in 1849.

Dr. Blackwell went on to open an infirmary for women and children, trained nurses during the Civil War, opened a medical college and became a professor of gynecology. All while facing discrimination for practicing as the first female doctor.
