"Delivering a baby is a miracle that just never gets old. Every time I get to deliver a baby, I'm overjoyed," says Crystal Johnson, MD, with Lexington Women's Care Sandhills.

Growing up in Columbia with both parents in health care, Dr. Johnson was around hospitals often. She loved being able to shadow her mother or other nurses on occasion and knew she wanted to be a doctor at a young age. After she picked up her OB/GYN textbook in medical school, Dr. Johnson knew she'd found her calling.

While she loves delivering babies, she also enjoys the surgical component of her specialty, which often allows her to cure conditions rather than manage them. A hysterectomy or fibroid surgery can help improve a woman's quality of life immediately, which is gratifying for Dr. Johnson.

"Since I've been in practice for 18 years, I'm now starting to see babies I delivered as teenage patients. Building lasting relationships with my patients is important, and now it's coming full circle. I'm fortunate to be part of some of the happiest moments of their lives and see them through the challenging ones."
