High school sports are back in season, and with that comes increased physical activity and maybe more trips to the doctor’s office. But a more serious issue that is important to know about is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It’s a heart condition where the heart muscle is abnormally enlarged, and it could result in shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue or stroke.

It is a genetic condition and therefore tends to run in families. Learn more on our blog.

Cameron Greene understands that a sense of community makes all the difference to patients struggling with their diagnoses. It’s why he enjoys leading a therapeutic class for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) called Harmonicas for Health®. Playing the harmonica, he said, mimics breathing exercises for improved pulmonary health, but it also affords cognitive benefits and a sense of accomplishment. A fun, interactive approach to health care, this program leads to tremendous improvements in his patients — which makes it rewarding for Cameron, too.

Working at Lexington Medical Center is so beloved by Lillian Lopez that she inspired her daughter Jaylin to do the same. Jaylin grew up attending company events with Lillian and said employees felt like family. It came as no surprise, then, that the hospital was the perfect start for a job when Jaylin graduated high school. Her role in Nutrition Services gives her a unique opportunity to engage with health care professionals on a day-to-day basis, and it also provides inspiration for her career. “After shadowing on one of the floors, I knew immediately I was meant to be a nurse,” Jaylin said.

Celebrate Independence Day with a bang – but remember to be careful! Sparklers may seem safe, but they can be more dangerous than you think. Burning at a scorching 2,000 degrees, sparklers can quickly ignite clothing and cause severe burns if dropped on feet. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association reports that sparklers alone account for more than 25% of emergency room visits for fireworks injuries.

For a safe and spectacular fireworks show, check out one of the Midlands' fantastic displays this July 4th:

June 29: Lake Murray (displays at Spence Island & Dreher Island at 9:30 p.m.)
July 4: Fort Jackson Hilton Field (gates open at 4 p.m., fireworks around 9:00 p.m.)
July 4: Fireworks with the Phil at Segra Park (gates open at 6:30 p.m. and orchestra starts at 8 p.m.)

Ear Tubes Help Recurring Ear Infections 06/19/2024

Some children are prone to having multiple ear infections, which can cause hearing problems and other serious complications, including speech delay. If children have recurring ear infections and have undergone numerous rounds of antibiotics, pediatricians often refer the child to an ear, nose, and throat specialist to consider ear tubes.

Visitors notice right away that LMC Extended Care prioritizes the comfort of its residents, and residents appreciate how service expectations take shape in every department. These four employees love to credit the dedicated nursing staff, but LaKenna, Yamilka, Carolina and Cody make their own unique contributions to the well-being of this facility — whether they manage its nurses, recruit volunteers, maintain its cleanliness, or keep utilities up and running. They’re the ties that bind LMC Extended Care’s many parts into a whole, and make it feel like a home.

This week, interventional cardiologist Robert A. Leonardi, MD, with Lexington Medical Heart and Vascular Center, implanted our hospital's 900th WATCHMAN™ device. WATCHMAN™ is a left atrial appendage occlusion device implanted in the cardiac cath lab to reduce the risk of stroke from blood clots that form during irregular heartbeats (non-valvular atrial fibrillation). The device also eliminates the need for long-term blood thinner medication in patients who are at risk for bleeding complications. We salute Dr. Leonardi and the Cardiac Cath Lab team for helping improve the lives of so many patients.
