STORY OF A SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST LEARNING PAUSE:
Dr. Julie Faude is now a lead instructor with SLC. This is her journey with P.A.U.S.E. (TM):
"I came to SLC Collaborative as a Clinical Psychologist with 25 years experience working at an Independent lower school. The moment I experienced the IFS approach personally, I turned my attention to bringing this model to educators and school personnel. I know what it is like running a classroom, and how easy it is to LOSE IT and have "parts" take over! Teachers are up against a wall right now. We need a unique solution.
The P.A.U.S.E. model provides a clear roadmap to Pause and shift from our automatic response (Saying, “STOP IT”) to being Aware of what is going on the inside (“Oh, a part of me feels I need to get this under control.”). P.A.U.S.E guides us to care for our own parts so we are available to truly Understand our student's various parts and their needs. From this point, we can connect and collaborate with our students to Search for Solutions and Experiment in action. Indeed - P.A.U.S.E. transformed the quality of my everyday interactions with students."

What an honor to join Dick Schwartz, Founder of IFS, for a Keynote panel at the recent IFS Conference in Denver just over a week ago. I was thrilled to share how we have adapted core concepts and skills inspired by IFS to uplift everyday relationships in our school communities. And the highlight was sharing stories of global impact, stories of my remarkable colleagues from Connecticut to Colorado to California, from Germany to Jordan to Australia, who are supporting young people and the adults who care for them to experience greater Self-Leadership even amidst the extreme challenges so many of them face. I felt such hope!

We are loving offering in person retreats for school leaders exploring how we nurture well-being in our communities, starting with ourselves. Here SLC facilitator Dr. Kathryn Serino is leading the administrators for North Haven CT in a fun exercise to draw their “best summer selves” and then ask, “What of this do I want to bring with me into the school year?” In numerous districts leaders said- “ the sense of time, calm, breath, joy”. How do we do this? Pause and follow our own micro practices to return to Self again and again.
Last day of summer with my son… Preparing to start high school tomorrow! We went on a walk together at the reservoir and Aarons level of self-awareness, depth of inquiry and wisdom moved my heart. “Mom, I want to think about what helps we show up in my best mind set…. Mom, I recognize what I need is consistency… then I can accomplish things and I feel good about myself… Mom, how can I enjoy the present moment? I want to find what brings me true happiness…” These moments with him remind me how much we under-estimate the depth, longing and capacity of our adolescents. I am so proud of him and so fortunate to be his mom.
Such a joy for Kath, Kirsten and I to meet with the school leadership team in East Hampton Connecticut last week! Superintendent Paul Smith recognizes the essential value of well-being for school administrators as integral for district wellbeing. Together we experienced the power of practicing PAUSE to nurture self and enhance everyday relationships.
So thrilled that last week Dr. Kath Serino and Kirsten Sanderson ran a PAUSE half day retreat for school leaders in New Hartford CT. When participants were asked at the end for one word to describe their experience that day they said: Family, eager, breathe, excited, grateful, awed, thankful. I am so thrilled our team is out on the road, serving our local communities and bringing deep care to the adults that run our schools and care for our youth. Thank you New Hartford for partnering with us!
CHECK THIS OUT! We have two new cohorts starting in Feburary for our signature workshop series "The Essential PAUSE: Care for Self, Connect to Others, Shift Schools!" Our Sunday Cohort will is focused on supporting educators (anyone who works in or with schools. And... NEW... Our Wednesday Cohort will focus on PARENTS!

IN OUR POWER
A poem in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
By Joanna Curry-Sartori
Together, let us be
the noble leadership,
the compassionate friend,
the wise mentor we are looking for.
Source the inner space,
the reservoir of true, deep courage, compassion and calm.
Tap this well-spring to be of service to humankind.
For friends who are grieving, hold them in their loss.
For friends who are hurt, acknowledge their pain.
For friends who are angry, hear their message.
For friends who are scared, understand the danger they’ve known.
For friends who carry generational harm, validate their truth.
For friends who experience differences, listen to understand.
For friends who feel lost and confused, provide comfort and clarity.
For our friends who need hope and meaning, remind them of what is possible.
These friends may be those around us, in our homes, schools, community and world.
These friends may reside within us as our different parts, holding our perspectives, stories and needs.
Friends within and without -
they all need to be welcomed with love and respect.
Keep their company with compassion,
welcome them in the warmth of the heart.
Keep their company with calm,
accept them in the peace of the heart.
Keep their company with courage,
nurture the knowing of the heart.
As we are in our power together,
may we see our precious world
re-member, reconnect and return
to who we truly are!

You know those moments when your buttons are pushed, other people's reactions mystify you, and you wish there was a more effective way to navigate those sticky, confusing, stressful everyday situations? You wish you could just be your best self?
As a mother, family therapist and consultant in schools, I found I was spending each day exploring these moments with others and puzzling over our options. From this the P.A.U.S.E model emerged- a potent 5 step process that leads to calm, collaborative interactions. Inspired by IFS, this model is grounded in cutting edge wisdom and it's trauma informed, mindfulness based, attachment enhancing and naturally restorative. And yet... it's intuitive and simple.

Tonight I met up with three trail blazing educators - Kirsten,Amy and Melissa (not pictured) who’ve been integrating IFS wisdom into their lives and classrooms since 2017. While we discussed how to bring the PAUSE model to students, over and again they emphasized they even as we are teaching a lesson, we, as adults, need to follow the model, check how we are being, where we are coming from, be real, walk the talk. How fortunate am I to work with these creative, compassionate, courageous teachers!

Our Story
Self-Leadership Collaborative provides schools a vision and practical framework to shift how all community members can engage with greater courage, compassion and effectiveness in daily interactions and activities. We appreciate that ultimately this is realized through the power of informal everyday relationships as well as formal learning events for adults, curriculum for students and school wide policy and practices. Our approach is informed not only by Internal Family Systems but also neuroscience, trauma research, behavior and culture change methodology, attachment theory, the CASEL model for social and emotional learning, as well as mindfulness practices. With all of these modalities, the Self-Leadership Collaborative offers a unique comprehensive, sustainable and transformative model in the field of Social/Emotional Learning (SEL).
OUTCOMES for Positive Engagement, Emotional Empowerment, Integration and Optimal Potential. When applied systemically, Self-Leadership infuses the whole school culture and climate and promises to profoundly inform adult and student capacity to:
● Increase self-awareness ● Regulate and express emotions effectively ● Build compassionate and collaborative relationships ● Embrace challenges with courage and confidence ● Contribute constructively to the school community ● Engage deeply in teaching and learning.
After numerous years implementing concepts of Self-Leadership in school systems as an integral part of mindfulness and social and emotional learning curriculums, this school year, 2019 - 2020, we are piloting a holistic implementation of our model in three schools in the Greater Hartford, Connecticut area. The experience and results of working in these lab schools will position us to refine and share the model more widely starting in 2020.
