I'm giving a big "thumbs Up" to this documentary about the old tv series, "Reading Rainbow", that promoted reading for children in the 1980s and 1990s. It was so interesting to learn about how the show was created and how LeVar Burton became such an icon for kids.

Hi there illustration lovers! My name is Joe Rocco and I'm a freelance illustrator who mostly works in children's publishing, but I also create illustrations for editorial and advertising clients. I've worked in animation, as an art director for a large children's website, as a graphic designer for many an office in Los Angeles, as a storyboard artist for cat litter commercials and as a lounge singer for the Ramada Inn. I'm currently working out of my studio in Orange County, California and trying to move to Saratoga Springs, NY by the very end of the year. During our move, I tripped and fell down 14 steps of the staircase, like Meryl Streep in “Death Becomes Her”, saving all my Tiki glasses but lightly spraining my right ankle. Ta Da!!!

Some samples of work from just my children's publishing portfolio this year with all new pieces and more on the horizon. Working as a children's book and YA author and illustrator, creating comics for young readers and illustrations has been a lifelong dream, among other goals. I look forward to 2024 with optimism, creativity and ambition.

Who says elephants aren't graceful? Although if I was that mouse I would be a little concerned about where my dancing partner will dismount. It's day and I am an illustrator who loves working on anything that is silly, offbeat and just plain filled with humor...for kids and kids at heart. I'm plain kooky for it!

Here's an update on the "Fluffer & Nutter" animated short that I've created a crowdfunding GoFundMe account for. I've been busy juggling a couple of jobs all Summer to finally be in a position to devote more of my time to projects like this animated short, which is so deeply personal to me and as passionate a project as I've ever made for myself. Although I didn't even come close to raising the amount that I initially had as my goal, I did raise enough that if I use my own savings I can restructure the scope of the short to being shorter and less of a developed story. It is now something designed to make people laugh and only want more. But it will feel very complete at the same time. The short should be a few minutes in length and I won't be able to afford original music so I'm using a score that is in the public domain and some very clever bongo music. I'm making all of the sound effects myself and on the 22nd I managed to wrangle all of the voiceover actors to record the dialogue here in my home studio with money raised from the GoFundMe funds. I am so grateful to everyone who contributed so far and I do not want to let anyone down so I will proudly get this made thanks to all your help. Originally, I had hoped to pay an animation assistant but my budget only allows for me to do all of the work myself. Flat digital puppets have been created for many of the characters and some backgrounds are now works in progress. I'm editing my script and storyboarding the entire project. Some of which I will post to show the work and how it has transformed from what it originally was designed to be. My fundraiser is still going for a little while longer to see if I can reach a base amount that will pay for the fundamentals of making this project and if anyone can contribute to it I will be so grateful. At the end of the day, I am so excited to be working on this and I expect to have many weekends and late nights getting this to look fantastic and be a very funny venture.
