Better Breathing for Athletic Performance
Are you struggling with crashing after a strenuous workout? Are you running out of breath and gasping for air? Is your stamina too limited and your energy levels dipping? You’ve been told to hydrate and take aminos, protein, vitamins and minerals. But have you been told to SHUT YOUR MOUTH?
Yes, mouth breathing isn’t serving you well. The importance of nasal breathing has been long overlooked. “What’s the difference?” you ask. “Isn’t it the same oxygen, no matter how it gets into your lungs?” Well, no! Air that goes through your nose first gets filtered by the little hairs removing dust and dirt in the air, and it gets moisturized, and temperature adjusted so it enters the lungs without irritation. This has a huge impact on asthma sufferers. Secondly, the lining of the nose produces nitric oxide that goes into your bloodstream and acts as a vasodilator. It travels throughout your body, opening the arteries, veins and capillaries, which enables the gas exchange of respiration, oxygen in and CO2 out. It feeds your muscles what they need to exercise. Mouth breathing doesn’t do any of this, so your capacity is limited. Even though nasal breathing requires more airflow resistance than mouth breathing, it is more efficient, so your body can breathe at a slower rate and not have to work as hard for the same amount of oxygenation.
Some other undesirable consequences of mouth breathing are:
Bad breath
Dry mouth
Dental health problems like tooth decay, gingivitis and grinding your teeth
Snoring
Sleep Apnea
Activating your sympathetic nervous system- also known as your fight or flight response- which in turn increases cortisol levels and triggers thyroid problems.
So, you can only imagine the extensive list of downstream consequences to your health.
For overall health and wellness, and improved athletic performance, learn to nasal breath.
Here’s what you can do:
Many of us have deviated septums and stuffy noses. You can do this at night before sleep, and before you exercise:
Rinse your nose out with pure saline spray, and blow your nose, one nostril at a time.
Use a Breathe-Right Strip (or any of the many products now available for nasal dilation)
Try these exercises a few times a day, especially before exercise:
Alternate Nostril Breathing:
Exhale completely
Block the right nostril with your finger, and inhale through the left nostril.
Release the right nostril and block the left nostril. Exhale through the right nostril
Repeat this alternate pattern for up to 5 minutes.
Diaphragmatic breathing: (Belly breathing)
Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly, just beneath your ribcage but above your diaphragm.
Slowly inhale through your nose, while your stomach pushes toward your hand. Your chest should remain still.
When you exhale, through pursed lips, tighten your abs and let your stomach fall gently as your chest stays still.
Humming Nasal Resistance:
Inhale through you nose
Partially block both nostrils at once, with the tips of two fingers, so you can exhale slowly, with resistance to the air flow inside your nose
While exhaling through your nose, hum loudly through your throat, like a cat purring loudly, so you feel vibrations in your throat and nostrils.
Release your fingers. Inhale through your nose. Repeat
These are a few basics to help you on your journey to better breathing for better living.
