Our first Speakers and Social event was a success! Forty-two attendees from 19 different organizations gathered together to network and learn - and have some fun too! Thank you to our guest speaker Jennifer R. Hudson from thinkbeyondpr for your incredible presentation that inspired our attendees to continue to make an impact in afterschool and summer programs across Palm Beach County.
CONGRATULATIONS to our AMAZING Graduate Teaching Assistants! Gabrielle Santiago, Yarrow Koning & Di Liu have successfully completed their two-year assistantship at Pine Jog and are also graduating from FAU with their Masters's degrees in Environmental Education. FAU PJEEC Climate READY dual enrolled Teen Ambassadors taught 4th and 5th-grade students across the county about weather, climate, and community resiliency to change using NOAA’s Science on a Sphere, storybook creation, and hands-on activities last fall 2022. They also took a field trip to Gumbo Limbo and met with FAU’s Dr. Wyneken to learn about sea turtle research and the effects of warming temperatures on turtle populations. Spring semester focuses on community outreach. More to come; stay tuned!

Spotlight on Summer #8: Community Foundation Grant – Riviera Beach Community Lab
In cooperation with the Riviera Beach Youth Empowerment Program/ City of Riviera Beach, FAU Pine Jog has created a community lab (COLAB) micropropagation facility to engage underserved youth in Riviera Beach. It is a place where students now work with FAU scientists to propagate, grow and out-plant endangered orchids & plants in their community. By teaching youth the concepts of restoration science and lab science, we hope to spark an interest that could lead to a career in an ESTEM field, as well as nurture environmental stewardship! Spotlight on Summer #7 – Munson Foundation Support
Students from Lake Worth were provided a summer learning opportunity with FAU Pine Jog to experience first-hand the importance of water as a resource in south Florida. Visiting key locations, the group met with local environmental agency professionals, researchers and educator for a deeply immersive experience! Airboat, catamaran and pontoon boat expeditions were included to access the key locations of study. A special thanks to The Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation for providing grant funding to support this significant educational opportunity! The School District of Palm Beach County
Spotlight on Summer #6: Go FAU Pine Jog Urban Earth Force Initiative (Go UEF)
Students from For the Children, Inc. developed an environmental community inventory through spring by exploring local environmental issues focusing on energy, water, biodiversity, waste, and sustainability. The teens implemented a community composting program for their final project. Their program culminated in visiting the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge to share the results of their final community project with program sponsors, and be provided a tour of the refuge by their amazing team! Arthur R. FAU Pine Jog’s popular summer day camp program ran for eight weeks, with approximately 120 campers each week. Each summer our goal is to provide a quality program which supports children's physical, emotional, and cognitive, development in a safe, secure environment. Campers experienced a balance of environmental education, arts, culture, sports, and outdoor fun with each week offers a different environmental theme. Go Owls! Spotlight on Summer #4: Lexington Youth Environmental Academy Visits FAU Pine Jog
LYEA participants travelled to Florida to work with FAU Pine Jog for a week long academic social immersion experience based on our H20 to Go!, Fellows AND Climate READY programs! On their return, these students share their experiences to inspire, educate and empower each other to continue to pursue their related civic involvement and career pursuits. Spotlight on Summer #3: H20 to Go! Connections
H2O to Go! – Connections returns! Students from FAU High School and other Palm Beach County High Schools joined us for intense week-long, in-residence programs for dual enrollment college credit, in order to study South Florida’s hydrological issues. Students were immersed in experiential learning throughout each week, engaging in problem-based learning as they proposed, discussed, and defended their own solutions to current problems we face in the Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades watershed. Spotlight on Summer #2: NOAA Climate READY – Ambassadors Teen Institute
FAU Pine Jog hosted teens from high schools across Palm Beach County for the residential Climate READY (Resilience Education and Action for Dedicated Youth) Ambassadors Teen Institute. Students stayed in dorms at the FAU Jupiter campus for an intense week of learning about climate change, community resilience, and how to communicate effectively with diverse audiences. This summer FAU Pine Jog hosted dedicated teachers from Palm Beach County at the Climate READY (Resilience Education and Action for Dedicated Youth) Teacher Collaborative, consisting of a two-day teacher workshop and ongoing professional learning community that provides 4th-12th grade educators with the knowledge, resources, strategies, and support they need to help students build essential climate literacy skills, understand local impacts, and make a difference in their communities!
