In May 2023, the West Des Moines Police Department formed our Crisis Intervention Team, in collaboration with Heart of Iowa Community Services. The Crisis Intervention Team responds to calls for service with one police officer and one mental health professional, with the ultimate goal of de-escalating individuals in crisis, providing the best resources available and ensuring the safety of all individuals.

Join us June 8th for the 24th Annual Cops-N-Bobbers Fishing Derby at the pond on the City Hall campus located at 4200 Mills Civic Parkway. This family friendly event runs from 9 to 11 AM with prizes awarded at 11:30. No fishing license is required and there will be plenty of fun, prizes, and stuff for the kids. People under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. We look forward to seeing you!
The West Des Moines Police Department believes in Quality Service to our community. We value our partnerships within the community and the ability to give back in many ways. For the month of June, we are partnering with “I Support the Girls” for our Donations for Dignity drive. We are collecting new bras, gently used bras, new underwear, and new packages of tampons/pads. These essential items will be distributed to those in need. A collection bin will be in the front lobby of the WDM Police Department for donation drop off anytime Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 4:30 PM. Large quantity donation questions can be directed to Officer Dexter 515-222-3333.

Unfortunately, the West Des Moines Police Week Picnic on May 16th, 2024 at the West Des Moines Police Department is cancelled due to significant amounts of precipitation causing delays in construction and parking issues.

Over the last three days, the West Des Moines Police Department, in conjunction with the FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency , Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has hosted a C3 Pathways / NCIER Active Shooter Incident Management (ASIM) Advanced course at the Iowa Events Center.
This was a three day comprehensive incident management course consisting of professional development classroom blocks and eleven full-scale exercises. Participants are trained to integrate and manage a multi-discipline response to a full range of active shooter and hostile event threats, including complex coordinated attacks. Scenarios included active shooter events, suspect at large, reunification, improvised explosive devices, and hostage barricade incidents. This course was DHS funded and was provided at no cost to local communities.

The West Des Moines Police Department is excited to join the Iowa Department of Public Safety at the Hall of Law for the "2024 Build My Future" event!
The event takes place on April 17th from 7:00am to 3:00pm at the Iowa State Fair Grounds. By participating in this event, we will work alongside other law enforcement officers, fire departments, and EMT's in welcoming and engaging with over 5,000 high school students from across Iowa. They will have the unique opportunity to participate in hands-on activities that offer a glimpse into the world of first responders and public safety!
The Drug Enforcement Administration - DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is on Saturday, April 27th from 10 AM – 2 PM. The West Des Moines Police Department will be partnering with the DEA to collect your unused, unwanted, and expired prescription drugs.
This event is aimed at making our community safer and healthier. The drug overdose epidemic is a clear and present threat to members of our community and communities nationwide. Properly disposing of your unused, unwanted, and expired prescription medications, can help reduce the number of accidental or intention drug overdoses and/or drug abuse.
Help us, help the community and safely dispose of those medications. Simply come to the front parking lot of the West Des Moines Police Department and hand us your medications. We’ll even meet you at your car window, so you don’t have to get out!

The WDM City Council will conduct a public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year City property tax levy during a special Council meeting on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The total City tax rate proposed for FY 24/25 will decrease from the current year ($10. 90) to ($10.86). This action sets a maximum tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year. At the Council meeting on April 15, 2024, the Council will conduct a public hearing on the entire proposed City budget and vote on its adoption.
