Penned by John Fogerty, the track's whimsical lyrics were inspired by Dr. Seuss's "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street", aiming to delight Fogerty's young son. The song stands out in CCR's catalogue for its use of the dobro, marking the only instance of this instrument on a Creedence track. Despite its fantastical imagery, the opening line grounds the song in reality before launching into a parade of surreal characters and objects. "Lookin' Out My Back Door" appeared on CCR's fifth studio album, "Cosmo's Factory", named after the band's rehearsal space. While narrowly missing the top spot on Billboard, the song reached #1 on Cash Box's Top 100, cementing its place as one of the band's most enduring hits.
