Whether it’s substances, s*x, gambling, you name it— one of the clear identifiers of addiction is this: we believe it will be worth it and develop tunnel vision so we don’t have to see the enormity of the fallout in our lives. Our dopamine system in the brain and nervous system’s survival strategies are out of wack, so we use and use, chasing a feeling state, even to the point of death.
Recovery is possible, life is possible. Today’s a great day to make a phone call, ask for help, and begin building a plan and support system.

Do you have compassion for the part of yourself that thought violating your values was the only way to get your needs met? Are you able to nurture that wounded part?
We cannot hate ourselves into change. But if we can come to love ourselves, the change we want most will be inevitable.

What happened when you were little is not your fault. When something occurs in your adult life that reminds your nervous system of childhood trauma, the hurt part of you—your inner child— shows up and takes over. When a kid drives the bus of an adult’s life, chaos ensues.
Your life begins to change for the better when you realize the only person in the world who can heal your wounded child is you… not your parents, your best friend or your spouse. This is an inside job we call “re-parenting.”
Be honest, how do you treat your inner child? Are you harsh and critical? Do you abandon them to keep the peace, or abuse them to “get results”? Do you restrict comfort as a punishment or indulge them in pleasure to avoid pain?
There is a functional, healthy adult available to you who will love and lead the wounded child, so they can relax and be a kid!
