Success can come quickly or it can take years to achieve. Growth and perseverance are key.

MINDSET. That’s what the young kids like to say nowadays. But the “mindset” that they have may not necessarily be the right mindset. So I gave my children an insight to the kind of mindset I wish for them to have.

16 years. That’s how long it took Carlos Yulo to achieve his goal of winning a gold for the country. The hardwork he put in surpassed his goal as he won not one but two medals.

“16 years?” luna asked. “That’s a long time”
“And then just one slip or bad landing, he wouldn’t have won” said Maya

It takes a long time to build good things.
A house.
A career.
Friendships.
Your wealth.
A skill.
A sport.
Your dreams.

But it also takes just a second to ruin everything.
You lose your home to a fire.
You get fired from your job.
You fight with a friend.
You lose all your money on a bad business or to pay for something.
You get injured. You fumble on your routine.
You lose everything you have worked for. Sometimes because of something you did, sometimes because of things out of your control.

“So Carlos was able to not lose anything for 16years?”

He lost a lot of times, I’m sure. Maybe even got injured sometimes. I’m sure there were days when he wondered how he was going to pay for all the training he needed or overcome all the obstacles ahead of him. But I guess he really, really wanted it so he just woke up the next day and trained all over again and looked for solutions and focused on what he needed to do to get what he wanted; even on the very difficult, Ive-lost-everything days.

The GROWTH mindset.
It’s literally growing through what you’re going through. It’s knowing that success is made up of a hundred failures. It’s having the humility to learn from everything and putting in the effort necessary.

That’s the kind of mindset that will take our children to where they want to go.
It’s what drove this little boy- and all his fellow Olympians- to the Olympics.
It’s not something we can see or measure or grade, but it’s definitely something we can cultivate and encourage.
