We had a great time today creating awareness of fall prevention for National Fall Prevention Day. Thanks to all the people who participated in or balance screening. If you are at risk for falls what can you do to prevent them?
1. Begin a regular exercise program- Memberships are available for Central Maryland Fitness, a fitness division of CMRS. We also offer numerous yoga and Tai Chi classes that have proven results to help with balance.
2.Review your medications with your health care provider-
3. Have your vision and hearing checked- poor vision, low vision and wearing outdated glasses all increase your chances for falling. Poor hearing and having vestibular disturbances also play a large role in your balance.
4. Do a home safety check with
` Remove throw rugs

Make sure you have plenty of lighting and with in easy
reach especially close to your bed.

Have hand rails installed if needed for extra support and
grab bars in your shower and toilet- never use your furniture
as a support to walk.

` Keep items you use often in low cabinets that you can easily
reach without a step stool

`Wear proper shoes both inside the house and outside

Remove items you may trip over and never store items on
stairs.
Ask for help or wait to go outdoors if their is ice or any slippery conditions.
Keep a cell phone near you at all times in case a fall does
happen.

Do you know one way a therapist can add resistance to your exercise? Thera bands are used on a regular basis to help patients add some resistance in their workouts. But why do they have different colors and what does that mean? These resistance bands have varying strength and the therapists will recommend the correct color depending on the area being worked on and the ability level of the patient. Typically the resistance levels range from lightest color to darkest in resistance such as yellow being the least resistance and black being the strongest resistance . Your therapist may also recommend using these as part of your home exercise program.

Have you ever suffered from a sudden onset of dizziness or vertigo? Vertigo is a feeling of moving when you are not. It often feels like you are spinning or the world is spinning around you. These symptoms can be caused by a problem within the brain or the inner ear. One of the most common causes of vertigo we see is BPPV. These initials stand for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. BPPV occurs when tiny calcium particles ( often called crystals) become dislodged and end up in the semi-circular canals of the inner ear. Certain head positions i.e. rolling in bed, looking up or bending over cause these crystals to move and stimulate hair follicles in the inner ear which triggers vertigo, lasting usually no more then 30 seconds. CMRS is proud to have a therapist that is certified to treat these conditions. Her name is MJ Ward. MJ has specialized training to perform tests to diagnosis the problem and can usually treat BPPV in 1-2 visits. As stated earlier, there are several causes of vertigo w/ BPPV being one of them but MJ and our skilled PT/PTA staff are trained to address the many causes of vertigo which often cause balance problems. We set up a specific exercise program in order to increase balance and stability and decrease the complaints of vertigo to make the patient less of a fall risk.

Anyone ready for an arm wrestle? Did you ever wander how strong your grip strength is or how it compares to others in your age group? A Hand Dynamometer is used for testing hand grip strength. A hand dynamometer is also used to test comparative strength in the left and right hand. Various kinds of hand dynamometers exist, each with a specific testing goal implemented in its design. Generally speaking, testing using a hand dynamometer is done by having the subject grip the dynamometer and squeeze it. A reading is taken, and the results are compared to accepted norms or, for rehabilitative uses, to past performance. Typically your dominant hand is stronger. Check out the chart to see results for male and female. During your next visit ask to have your hand grip measured and see how you compare to others in your age group.

National Rehab Awareness week is next week and we wanted everyone to know a little background of CMRS.
