On Equality Day, we reflect on the historic struggle for women’s rights and the work still ahead. In 1919, Illinois became the first state in the nation to ratify the 19th Amendment, and today, we continue to fight for women of all backgrounds by strengthening and protecting women’s reproductive rights and cracking down on gender-based violence.

On this day in 1791, enslaved Africans in Saint Domingue, present-day Haiti, rose up against their captors, a revolt that would contribute to ending the appalling transatlantic slave trade. The United Nations recognizes August 23 to remember the countless victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

Watch out for mites!
Itch mites are out and about because of the cicada eggs hatching. Thankfully, they don't live on us, but they can make your skin itchy and red. Make sure to shower after being outdoors for extended periods!

More than 400 Navajo people served as “code talkers” during World War II, using their native language to send secret messages on behalf of Allied forces. Since 1982, the federal government has set aside a day to recognize the Navajo code talkers, whose messages were never deciphered by opposing forces. Today we salute their contributions, along with the sacrifices of all Native American servicemembers.
