*DIAGNOSIS SPOTLIGHT*
*What is Specific Learning Disorder?
Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which individuals have difficulties learning and using academic skills. There are three types of SLD: SLD with impairment in reading (often referred to as Dyslexia), SLD with impairment in mathematics (often referred to as Dyscalculia), and SLD with impairment in written expression (often referred to as Dysgraphia). Individuals with SLD with impairment in reading often have difficulty with reading comprehension, decoding, reading rate, fluency, word reading accuracy, and spelling. Individuals with SLD in written expression often have difficulty with spelling, grammar and punctuation accuracy, and organization/clarity of written expression. Lastly, individuals with SLD in mathematics often have difficulty with number sense, memorization/learning of arithmetic facts, calculation, and math reasoning.
*How is Specific Learning Disorder diagnosed?
Specific Learning Disorder is typically diagnosed through a comprehensive psychoeducational or neuroeducational evaluation. These evaluations are usually conducted by a licensed psychologist. Comprehensive evaluations are best as they are able to rule out or identify other factors that may be impacting learning. These evaluations thoroughly look at a childβs performance in all academic areas as well as social/emotional functioning, executive functioning, and more.
*What is the treatment?
While SLD cannot be βcuredβ, there are many methods that will help individuals overcome challenges they may experience from the diagnosis. Many children and adolescents find success through academic intervention (academic-based programs, school-based services, or tutoring). Accommodations provided in school often help support children to overcome obstacles or challenges they may experience in their learning. Additionally, psychotherapy is often used to boost childrenβs self-esteem and confidence as this is often a struggle due to the challenges children experience in their academics.
*How can Weston Family Psychology help?
Our licensed psychologists at Weston Family Psychology provide comprehensive neuro-educational evaluations to provide parents with diagnostic clarity and information on their childβs strengths and areas of growth. After the evaluation is conducted, we provide families with recommendations for home, school, and other services that may be beneficial. At Weston Family Psychology, we also have academic intervention services (implementing the Lindamoodbell program) and have many amazing therapists that provide evidence-based psychotherapy.
