If you live alone or almost alone...
Just want to share a Smartphone App that I believe might be of interest to others who are dealing with a similar issue as Lindsay and I.
We live alone and have no children. We do have beloved animal companions. We were wondering what to do if something happened to both of us simultaneously (that is, we were both hospitalized, unconscious or dead). We do have estate planning in place, but our Executors would have to know about our situation in order to take action.
Enter the SnugSafe app. It runs on your phone. Every day at a predetermined time you use the app to let the SnugSafe company know you are okay for that day. You set the time. The app starts sending you reminders and notifications three hours before that time, and you can check in at any time after midnight.
There is also a way to check in by landline.
If you don't check in the app texts a list of emergency contacts you have entered and asks them to check on you. There is a monitored version (which we have) which also means that a dispatcher will try to call you, and will call your contacts as well. If the dispatcher can't get through to anyone they call 911 and you put information securely on file (address, lock codes, key location, etc.) that will allow first responders to enter your home to check on you and any animals.
We've been using this app for a while and like it a lot. We feel much more secure and it's all new technology - phone based, not the clunky "First Alert" stuff that requires neck-worn transmitters and older old tech. The monitored version is just $100 per year and the non-monitored version is free.
