100 years ago on August 1, 1924, the William Penn Hotel officially opened.
The hotel was built by Doyle & Dick of Los Angeles and originally owned by Robert McDowell from Seattle. The hotel consisted of 40 family apartments, 60 hotel rooms, a lavish dining hall, and restaurant. Beneath the rooms, 12 stores lined the buildingโs perimeter. Can you find the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce in the photos?
The William Penn hosted many weddings, club meetings, and business conventions. Among its regulars were the Kiwanis International Whittier Host Lions Club and Professional Womenโs Cub. The hotel was also the headquarters for Richard Nixonโs first national campaign office.
The William Penn Hotel served the community for 55 years. It tragically burnt down on February 5, 1979. Fortunately, no one was killed or seriously injured, but many residents were left without homes or personal items. Many local organizations, businesses and churches banded together to support those individuals.
Despite the communityโs love for the hotel and several attempts to have it rebuilt, the city declared the charred remains a public nuisance and ordered the hotel remains demolished in 1981.
Anti-slavery poet's letters found in Galloway charity shop book They letters - thought to be written by John Greenleaf Whittier - ended up in a Galloway charity shop.
