If you’re grilling, take it from us, food safety can be tough in the summer heat. We always rely on advice from the experts, so before you make that potato salad, read below:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends the following internal temperatures for grilling different foods:
🔥Burgers: 160°F
🔥Chicken: 160°F–180°F
🔥Steaks: 145°F for medium-rare, 160°F for medium, and 170°F for well done
🔥Ground beef, veal, lamb, and pork: 160°F
🔥Ground poultry: 165°F
🔥Reheated foods: 165°F minimum
Baylor University experts also recommend using a food thermometer to ensure food has reached a safe temperature, as meat and poultry can brown quickly on the outside. (Especially when dry rubbed!)
Here are some other grilling safety tips:
🌭Don't leave the grill unattended while it's lit
🌭Use long-handled utensils to avoid burns
🌭Don't move a hot grill
🌭If using a charcoal grill, don't use gasoline instead of charcoal lighter fluid
🌭Clean the grill after each use to remove grease and fat buildup that could cause a fire
🌭Test the grill for gas leaks before each use with a 50/50 solution of dish soap and water
🌭Keep grills on a level surface, more than 10 feet away from your home, garage, or other structures
🌭Keep children, pets, and overhanging branches away from the grill
🌭Don't use grills on balconies or under overhangs
🌭Avoid placing grills too close to combustible deck rails
