🚨🚨Artist Of The Month!!!🚨🚨
Our Artist of the Month for July is Nancy Fricker! She is such a talented painting artist and we really value her here at Beardens! Here is a few words from her about her journey, “I began working for Randy at Rayer's Bearden Stained Glass in 1999. I have always been inspired there, and learning every aspect of how to do glasswork was exciting! I especially enjoyed the designing element, and eventually transferring my knowledge of porcelain painting, to glasswork, as well. There was a wonderful glass painter at Bearden’s at the time and with her help, I began to learn how to apply that knowledge in more detail. I love the paint and fire process of Stained glass, because there are so many creative aspects of it! While working with Bearden’s, there have been so many exciting and fun projects we have been privileged to be involved with, it would be difficult to list them all. It has certainly made me a much better designer/artist and painter than I ever would have been otherwise and I am grateful for every minute! I had the honor of working with Randy and his crew at Bearden’s for over 18 1/2 years and enjoyed learning and growing with them. 🚨🚨Artist Of The Month!!!🚨🚨
Our Artist of the Month for June is Laine Pike the Art Director for Derby Recreation! Laine has been teaching Glass Fusing for 8 years at Derby Recreation! If you want to see what they do at Derby Recreation, there will be an art show on October 17th at the Hubbard Art Center featuring the glass fusing student projects! Mark your calendar!

Laine is a very talented artist that is always inspiring her students! Here is a little history that she wrote about herself!
“I have enjoyed making art ever since I was little. I spent my free time drawing in my countless sketchbooks, learning new techniques from various art books and watching Bob Ross and Mark Kistler on PBS. As an adult, I continue to spend my free time painting in my home studio. My paintings have been on display in various art shows in Wichita and Derby. I just recently finished my annual summer window mural at the Derby Public Library. These murals not only help promote their summer reading program but they also bring lots of joy and smiles to young and old who visit the library.

I am the Art Director for the Derby Recreation Commission where I program and instruct art classes for youth and adults. I am currently teaching Glass Fusing and Slumping and I’m also teaching art class for the Free Spirits group. I am also a member of the Derby Arts Council where we promote visual arts and showcase local artist.

When I started teaching art my knowledge expanded from drawing and painting to various other art forms like pottery, photography, sculpture and glass work. I started teaching Glass Fusing 8 years ago for the Derby Recreation Commission. There is still so much that I feel like I can learn about glass fusing. I enjoy the challenges my students bring to me and how we work together to essentially ‘see what happens’.
Even though I have many different medias that I work with, painting is what I find to be the most enjoyable.
I live in Wichita with my fiancé Marc Durfee.”

We’re thrilled to share our latest project at Beardens! A breathtaking stained glass dragonfly window, designed around two salvaged windows from an old church. This piece is a true labor of love, blending vibrant artistry with cherished memories.

🔹 The Story: Our client shared that dragonflies hold a special place in her heart. They remind her of her beloved dog, Dodger, who used to chase dragonflies at the lake. Capturing this memory was truly special and added a personal touch to the project.

🔹 The Process: Creating this masterpiece involved multiple intricate steps, including sandblasting, painting, and fusing the glass. Each piece was carefully selected and hand-cut to bring this vision to life. The way the sunlight dances through the vibrant hues is truly magical.

🔹 The Result: The final piece not only captures the beauty of nature but also preserves the history of the salvaged church windows, making it a unique blend of tradition and modern artistry.

Another masterpiece coming together at Beardens! Lead custom artist, Jake Thomas, is in process of assembling this custom dragonfly window! The wings were designed digitally, cut into vinyl, carved with a sandblaster, painted, and then fired in a kiln to get the end result! The body of the dragonfly are carefully cut and fused dichroic pieces of glass to add to the dimension of the dragonfly! Then, of course, the color choices to go around the dragonfly to complement it! Can’t wait to post when it gets installed! We’ve had so much fun bringing the vision of the customer to life!
