We couldn’t do and provide everything we do for our patients without our incredible supporters!!
We want to send a special thank you to our friend and long time supporter Mindy, who frequently stops by our street clinics with donations for our patients. Her most recent visit was to bring winter hats and gloves that her family helped purchase. Thank you Mindy and family! We appreciate your continued support and thoughtfulness.

Good morning! As we start another work week, remember, our teams will be out providing full medical care to unhoused, uninsured individuals in need. The weather is starting to get cold again, which adds another layer of discomfort for these individuals. If you would like to donate beanies, gloves, hand warmers or any other cold weather items, please reach out through our page. Thank you!

Just a reminder that we’re stocking up on cold weather gear to help protect our patients from the elements. It will be at least 4 weeks until the winter shelter is open and even then, we know far too many of our patients won’t be comfortable seeking shelter inside. We need help to keep them warm and healthy!

Wichita preps ‘more aggressive’ anti-camping ordinances aimed at homeless encampments 09/26/2024

We at ICT Street Team have recently read the article from the Wichita Eagle (https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article292686009.html) about the city working to draft anti-homelessness legislation. While we understand the challenges our community faces, we must emphasize that criminalizing homelessness will not solve the issue—in fact, it makes the situation worse.

Research consistently shows that criminalizing homelessness does NOT reduce homelessness or improve public safety. Instead, it leads to higher incarceration rates, greater strain on city resources, and exacerbates the cycle of poverty. Here are several sources that prove this point:

1. National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty reports that criminalizing homelessness increases arrests and fines but does not address the root causes like lack of affordable housing, mental health services, and employment opportunities.

2. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that cities with punitive measures for homelessness often see an increase in overall homelessness because such policies displace people rather than provide meaningful solutions.

3. The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness advocates for Housing First approaches, which focus on providing stable housing without preconditions. Cities using these methods—such as Salt Lake City and Houston—have seen significant reductions in homelessness.

As a team on the ground providing care for individuals experiencing homelessness, we urge our city leaders to reconsider punitive approaches and instead invest in proven, compassionate solutions like affordable housing, mental health services, and job training.

🏠 Ending homelessness requires a community-based approach—not criminalization. Let's focus on long-term solutions that restore dignity and offer real support to those in need. Together, we can build a better, more compassionate Wichita.

Sending a huge THANK YOU to the amazing students and staff at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine who donated over 1,700 ziploc bags to us! The students worked so hard on their recent community service day and used every single bag we had to make hundreds of first aid kits and hygiene bags for our patients. They then took it upon themselves to get donations from their fellow students and KCOM staff to replenish our supplies. Thank you so much for seeing a need and filling it! We look forward to working with these students doctors much more in the years to come.

❤️ Thank you!! ❤️
Huge Thank You to the anonymous donor who sent us 15 fleece blankets from our wishlist! The first recipient of one of these blankets shed a few tears and quickly wrapped up in it, thankful to be a little warmer as he tried to sleep on the concrete near our street clinic last night. Thank you for helping us keep him warm!

Who we are...

I’ll never forget him. Bill was 50 years old and had walked 6 miles to get to the public health clinic I worked at as a nurse practitioner. He simply came for a refill on his blood pressure medication. Looking over his vital signs, I noticed he had a fever and his pulse rate was high. When I walked in the room, the stench was severe. I had smelled this before. Anyone in healthcare can tell you that there are just some things you remember the smell of. This was the smell of infection. I asked this very nice man if he had any sores on his body and he told me that he had a “cut” on his foot. After much embarrassment, I convinced Bill to remove his shoe. What I saw was a large, red, swollen foot, with a large red streak up his leg. On the bottom of his foot was a large hole that went down to the bone. This man had a bone and a blood infection.

Although I was able to get Bill admitted to the hospital, the man still lost his leg and eventually died.

Before the ambulance came to pick him up from the public health clinic I remember asking him why he hadn’t come to the clinic before now. We would have seen him for free. Bill’s response has stayed with me. I had no way to get there.

I had no way to get there.
