Last month, SRM's Board of Directors and several staff members met in Spokane, Washington for the Summer Board Meeting. The in-person gathering aims to build off momentum from the Annual Meeting and create excitement for the next, while reviewing the goals, mission and vision of the Board and Officers and discussing ways they have been met and how to further them in the second half of the year.

During the meeting, a special demonstration of Phase 1 of the new data portal was shown by web developers from JTech - illustrating how the back end of the site will streamline processes like awards nominations and certification applications and store important data associated with society business.

The Summer Board Meeting was held at The Davenport Grand, the site of the 2025 Annual Meeting, and included a tour of the meeting facility and layout as well.

"... the collaborative research effort ... challenged the outdated dogma that livestock grazing in the sagebrush steppe always negatively impacts these ecosystems and, in fact, can convey desirable outcomes, particularly in regard to limiting both wildfire risk and invasive annual grasses."

Our thoughts are with those impacted by wildfires across the West right now.

Lisa Ellsworth, SRM Member and Oregon State University professor, joined Oregon Public Broadcasting reporter to explain why wildfires are not only occurring earlier and more frequently, but also consuming more acres - and how this is impacting the sagebrush steppe.

“One of BLM's highest priorities is to promote ecosystem health, and one of the greatest obstacles to achieving this goal is the rapid expansion of noxious and invasive weeds... BLM applies an integrated approach to vegetation management that includes science-informed and appropriate use of herbicides to manage weeds across public lands.”

2024 Ag Pride | The Joining of East and West 06/19/2024

We love a good story about rangelands taking people around the world.

"These places share these common interests, from the nomads in Tibet and herders in Mongolia to ranchers here [in the United States]," Daniel Miller told Tri-State Livestock News editor Kaycee Monnens-Cortner.

Read his inspiring story at the link below!

Oregon, Wyoming senators propose bill to expand grazing on federal land 06/13/2024

We've been hearing a lot of rumblings about the Operational Flexibility Grazing Management Program Act this week.

Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) worked with Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) to introduce the bill which "would improve the management of livestock grazing on federal lands by allowing livestock operators to adapt and respond to emergencies, like droughts or wildfires, more flexibly."

What do you think of the proposed legislation? Let us know in the comments!

The top Texas youth from our 2023 Youth Range Workshop are headed out this week for some intense, hands on range action. They will visit a number of ranches, evaluate soil health, practice low stress livestock handling, evaluate quail habitat, move grazing animals, evening leadership activities and so much more. They will spend some in depth time on the G-C Ranch, recent winner of the National Environmental Stewardship Award and several other ranches. Our ranches are eager to help these kids get their hands in the dirt!

Meanwhile, TSSRM is gearing up for our Youth Range workshop as well. A few lucky youth from that event will get to experience YRW2 next year!

Getting packed for YRW2! Who's ready for a week of serious range nerd fun! Many thanks for the support in purchasing tools and books for our participants.
