Monarch Butterflies usually start their migration to Mexico around October, so keep your eyes out for these bright orange butterflies as the weather gets colder.
When we think of Cicadas, we probably think of the loud buzzing or the brown shells they leave behind when they shed their exoskeleton. The life cycle of a Cicada starts when a cicada hatches from its egg, nestled into the wood of a tree. It then eats the fluids and sap the tree produces, before crawling down to the ground to feed on plant roots. Depending on the species, a cicada nymph can spend anywhere between 2 to 17 years underground! Finally, the nymph comes up to the surface as a fully grown cicada, leaving its old exoskeleton for us to find.
Interesting
Invasive insect spotted in 4-H entry at Kansas State Fair Kansas State Fair officials judging the 4-H entomology entries last week discovered an invasive insect that prompted quarantines elsewhere.
You’ve probably seen this bright yellow butterfly in your garden: the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. The female butterflies of this species have blue and orange coloration along the bottom of their wings, while on male Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, this blueish area is solid black.
Amazing video of a White Lined Sphinx Moth drinking out of flowers! If you look closely, you can even see the moth's proboscis (mouth straw) curl up after drinking from a flower.
Ever wonder what that large bug repeatedly thunking into your windows at night is? It might be a June Beetle! Also called June Bugs or May Beetles, these little guys get their name from their life cycle. They can live in the ground for up to 3 years as larvae, before they come up to the surface (usually around the month of June) and become adults.
As caterpillars, Swallowtail butterflies can be found eating parsley, dill, celery, and the leaves and stems of carrots. In some places, you can even find them on the leaves of citrus trees.
This is why good inspection is needed. Ants are great at finding cover and small access points. I almost missed these guys.
Ants don’t hear like we do because they don’t have ears! Instead, ants feel the vibrations caused by sound with special feelers on their feet and legs.
Cottonwood Borers are a type of Longhorn Beetle. Like their name implies, they prefer to feed on cottonwood trees, attacking the tree’s roots during larvae stages and chewing through the wood as adults.
Honey bees can fly very fast. On average, Honey bees fly at about 15 mph, but they are capable of flying up to 20 mph!
Ants are very strong. You might have heard that ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. But did you know that the neck joint of a certain species of ant can withstand pressure of up to 5,000 times its weight?
Ladybugs have two things that help them to avoid becoming someone’s meal. The first is their vibrant coloration that warns predators not to eat them. Second is the toxic, oily yellow substance that ladybugs secrete from joints in their legs. It smells and tastes terrible, so it discourages a predator from eating them.
Often mistaken for Bumblebees, the Carpenter Bee is a species of solitary bee. Rather than living in a large hive, Carpenter Bees make their homes by drilling tunnels into wood.
Really. I did.
Because he took too many days off!
