March 19 represented the change of seasons from the Winter or Water time to Spring which is the Wood time. The Wood element is responsible for new growth, clear decision making, and productivity. Its organ systems are the Liver and Gallbladder which store the Blood and regulate the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body. During this time of year Wind can be a problematic pathogen carrying imbalance into the body. External Wind manifests as seasonal allergies with itching and scratching while Internal Wind can manifest as tremors or seizures. Green foods like collard greens, kale, celery, and asparagus can help nourish and soothe the liver. Happy Springtime!! 🌱🌷🥬🥒
Recently I have had the joy of helping one of my patients with severe vestibular disease regain function. Vestibular disease is seen as an acute invasion of wind to the gallbladder channel affecting the ear. Goals of treatment are to dispel wind and strengthen Qi. Photos/Videos shared with permission- at first presentation Ozzy was depressed, rolling to his right and hadn’t eaten or been able to sit up to drink in over 3 days and was incapable of standing. Within an hour of his first acupuncture treatment he was able to sit upright and eat and drink….within the week after 3 more treatments the owner found him standing- after his 4th treatment at the end of another week he is walking and maneuvering the stairs. Great example of how acupuncture can help hasten recovery!
Treating a patient yesterday with seizures using Nao-shu, known as the brain association point, and Da- feng-men, known as the great wind gate. Seizures are known as internal wind in TCVM and will often worsen in spring time with windy weather.
