Omicron Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha

April and May recap for the ladies of Omicron Phi:

Greek week and NPHC week were great opportunities for our members to network with other chapters on campus as well as serve the greater Wilmington community!

We had an amazing time attending events and participating in the annual NPHC Yard show.

Our members Aniya Harvey (Public Health Major) and Ayanni Hyman (Public Health Major) attended A Queen's Tea Party, a networking event for professional black women in the Wilmington community.

At this event, both members were inducted into the Mentorship & Mindset in Health Professions program and awarded a scholarship to further their studies.

Ayanni Hyman was also awarded a scholarship from UNCW's College of Health and Human Services for her academic achievements in her major.

Chapter President Sydney Thaxton was recognized at the UNCW Cornerstone Awards for her leadership in campus engagement and at our Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference for her academic excellence.

Finally, congratulations to our graduating members: Cierra Johnson, Tiffany Vann, and Jordan Oldham Poe!

Kaelyn Elien is a Junior at UNCW studying Communications with a minor in Journalism.

Kaelyn is the assistant sports editor for The Seahawk and a member of the communication studies society.

Quarter semester recap with the 𝓞𝓱 𝓢𝓸 𝓕𝓵𝔂 ladies of Omicron Phi

March and February marked very eventful months for the ladies of Omicron Phi with service projects and community outreach. In February, we served at DC Virgo's Black History Read In, volunteered at the North Side Food Co-op, and supported Frankie's Market here in Wilmington.

In March, the ladies of Omicron Phi hosted our annual Skee-Week called "Journey to the Emerald City" inspired by the Wizard of Oz. Creating crafts, fostering sisterhood, helping our environment, and even volunteering with a service project

We will be watching The Wiz where it all began. The ladies of Omicron Phi are excited to close out the last day with you! As Dorothy said "Toto we are not in Kansas anymore" but in the Magical Land of Omicron Phi we will always be Oh So Fly!

Dr. Bertha Boykin Todd is a 75-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a member of the Alpha Psi Omega Chapter. Her dedication as well as her commitment to social justice speaks for itself. The ladies of Omicron Phi are excited to hear her lecture on the Wilmington Massacre.

Join us as we reflect on the importance of social justice and equity for all on Monday March 18,2024 at 6:08pm in Cogdon Hall room 1012.

In order to give back to the local community, the ladies of Omicron Phi request that attendees bring canned goods to donate for admission to this event.

We are asking attendees to wear business casual attire to this event. Choose between black (witch of the west) or pink (witch of the east)!

Dr. Bertha Boykin Todd is a 75-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a member of the Alpha Psi Omega Chapter.

Publishing her first book, My Restless Journey in 2010. Dr. Todd has since written four additional books including Reflections on a Massacre and a Coup.

Her dedication as well as her commitment to social justice speaks for itself. The ladies of Omicron Phi are excited to hear her lecture on this historical event that has shaped the city of Wilmington today.

On Thursday, February 8th, the ladies of Omicron Phi volunteered at the Northside Food Cooperative's first community dinner of the year! Members helped set up, served food to dinner attendees, connected with the community, and washed dishes after the event. The goal of these community dinners is to "create a space where neighbors nourish and care for one another."

On Saturday, February 10th, members volunteered at Frankie's Outdoor Market. Located at Portia Hines Park, the market is a space where local farmers and vendors have the opportunity to sell their goods to the community at an affordable price. The market aims to forge connections within the community while also addressing food insecurity. Members served market customers, danced with vendors, and enjoyed some sweets from Cake Man Thomas!
