Yesterday, our Bilingual Outreach Coordinator, Maydelis Gomez-Samon, was naturalized as a U.S. citizen! We are so grateful to have Maydelis as part of our team, as she is doing amazing work helping Hispanic families with kids enhance the talk and literacy environment in their homes.

Maydelis said, 'Without losing my Cuban roots, I am thriving in the country where my daughters were born and where I was reborn. Thank you, America, for allowing me to be part of this land of liberty and now a fellow citizen.'"

While we are all mourning the loss of longtime Wilmington City Councilmember and State Representative Joe DiPinto, did you know that Read Aloud Delaware is also part of Joe's legacy? Below is my email correspondence with Mr. DiPinto when I first got hired in January 2020 and discovered him on our donor list. Former State Rep Kevin Free, the founder of Read Aloud Delaware, is who Joe is referencing below in his email. We are thinking of the family and are grateful to him!

Dear James:
Please pardon the delay in responding, and Happy New Year!
I'm very pleased to hear about you and Read Aloud.. Kevin was the driving force to bring ReadAloud to Delaware. We both worked for duPont and were personal friends. When he decided to retire and move back to New Zealand to teach at the University of Aukland it opened the 4th District seat in the House and the Republican margin was slight. The registration favored the Democrats for the District. Mike Castle was the Governor and Kevin recommended me ( without telling me). I was serving in the middle of my 4th term in City Council , was traveling extensively for the Company and had no plans for higher office. I was subjected to enormous pressure and finally acceded.
When Kevin and I got together to plan both the campaign and an agenda for the first term, he told me that his #1 area of interest was the continuation of support for ReadAloud and he wanted me to pledge to support it.
That was an easy call, because both my wife Pat and I were strong proponents of early reading education and the utilization of phonics to produce good readers. Pat was a preschool and kindergarten teacher and when she retired in 1996 she became a ReadAloud volunteer at ToddlersTech at 4th and Greenhill and served for 12 years.
Interestingly, we been having discussions recently about her doing it again.
ReadAloud's record is splendid and we will continue to support it. I regret the State's inability to accept its potential to help to ameliorate a shameful record of student reading capability.
With regards and best wishes for your campaign.
