The history of black hair is a story of resilience, cultural pride, and ongoing struggles for recognition and acceptance. It reflects the complexities of identity, beauty, and power within the context of the African diaspora and serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of black hair as a symbol of strength and resistance.

Here are some tips for protective styles:

1. Preparing your hair: Before installing a protective style, make sure your hair is clean, moisturized, and well-conditioned. This helps to promote hair health and prevent dryness and breakage.

2. Choose the right style: Consider your hair type, lifestyle, and personal preferences when selecting a protective style. Some popular options include braids, twists, weaves, wigs, and updos. Choose a style that will allow your hair to rest and minimize manipulation.

3. Avoid excessive tension: While protective styles can be beneficial, it's important to avoid styles that create excessive tension or pulling on your hairline or scalp. This can lead to traction alopecia or hair loss. Make sure the style is comfortable and not too tight.

4. Moisturize regularly: Even with a protective style, it's crucial to keep your hair moisturized. Use a lightweight moisturizer or leave-in conditioner to hydrate your hair and scalp. You can apply the product using a spray bottle or concentrate on the exposed hairline and edges.

5. Protect your edges: The hairline and edges are delicate, so take extra care to protect them. Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on these areas, and use a satin or silk scarf or bonnet when sleeping to minimize friction.

6. Cleanse your scalp: While wearing a protective style, it's important to keep your scalp clean and free of product buildup. Use a diluted shampoo or a clarifying rinse to cleanse your scalp periodically. Be gentle to avoid disrupting the style.

7. Avoid excessive heat: Heat styling tools like flat irons and curling irons can damage your hair, even in a protective style. Minimize the use of heat and opt for heat-free methods to achieve desired styles, such as curling rods or flexi rods.

8. Take breaks between styles: Give your hair regular breaks between protective styles to allow it to rest and breathe. This helps to prevent tension, breakage, and scalp issues. Aim to wear a protective style for a maximum of 6-8 weeks.

9. Maintain a healthy diet: Good nutrition plays a vital role in hair health. Ensure you're consuming a balanced diet with plenty of vitamins, minerals, and proteins to promote strong and healthy hair growth.

10. Listen to your hair: Pay attention to how your hair responds to different protective styles. If you notice excessive shedding, breakage, or discomfort, it may be a sign that the style is not suitable for your hair. Be willing to make adjustments or try different styles until you find what works best for you.

Remember, everyone's hair is unique, so it's important to experiment and find the protective styles that work best for your hair type and lifestyle.

“Juneteenth” marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. Juneteenth 2023 will occur on Monday, June 19. #1865

Creating a safe space for the LGBTQ community isn't just about making a physical space safe. It's also about creating an environment where individuals feel respected, valued, and supported. By educating ourselves and others, using inclusive language, creating welcoming physical spaces, developing policies and procedures, and providing resources and support, we can create safe spaces for the LGBTQ community. Together as creatives/artisans we can create a world where everyone feels safe and accepted, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

“ Hairdressers have the power not only to transform hair, but also to transform how people feel about themselves and empower them on their journey to self-expression. “ ……
