Diversity and Belonging Are More Than Just Words to Us
At Modern Widows Club, we recognize the diverse populations within our organization and the communities we serve, and we strive for equitable access to services and support for all people. We value and appreciate our differences and embrace them as a source of strength for our organization.
We are committed to diversity and inclusion in every aspect of the work we do, and to creating an environment where every person feels valued, respected, and empowered. We ask all team, and volunteers to take part in our "MWC Cultural Competency Self-Assessment Tool" provided in their HR manuals.
We recognize that systemic discrimination, inequities, and barriers have historically affected individuals and communities based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, religious belief, and many other factors. Though we have more work to do to advance diversity and inclusion, we are committed to dismantling these structures.
We recognize that inclusion is about more than just representation. It means creating a culture of belonging where everyone can be their full, authentic selves and feel valued for their unique experiences, perspectives, and voices.
To achieve our commitment to diversity and belonging, we:
+ Foster an inclusive culture where every person is respected, heard, and valued.
+ Promote diversity by actively seeking out and including a range of perspectives and experiences.
+ Prioritize equity by identifying and addressing systemic barriers to ensure that all people have equal opportunity and access.
+ Promote understanding and awareness of diversity, inclusion, and belonging to our Board of Directors, HQ Team, Community Advocates, committee members, volunteers, and collaborators.
+ Hold ourselves accountable for our progress towards achieving our diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging goals.

We’re honored to call you wister®️ (widow + sister). 💛 It’s our trademarked name created for us at MWC.
Widowhood is a life event that 70% of married women (and some who are not legally married but partnered) experience.
Why are so few of us aware of this statistic before becoming widows ourselves?
This question highlights the need for a global awareness campaign. If so many women go through this experience, why is widowhood so invisible and often overlooked when it comes to global support?
Every city needs a widow crisis center where women can find resources, community, services, and programs to address the many secondary losses they experience. Imagine a future where these centers are as commonplace as emergency rooms, walk-in clinics, telehealth apps, and shelters for survivors of trafficking and domestic violence.
Widow survivors would welcome this concept because we know how it would revolutionize and transform the way widows are served for the next generation.
Future thinking is needed to pave the way and advocate for better caring of widows.
Who’s ready to join us for an upcoming in-person widow empowerment event?
Since its launch in 2017, the Widow Empowerment Event (WEE) this transformative event has changed the lives of thousands of widows over two and a half days filled with inspiring speakers, diverse vendors, engaging activities, and the creation of lifelong friendships.
Soon, we’ll be inviting you to complete a survey to help us understand your wants, needs, dreams, and hopes. This feedback will allow us to design an event that empowers your journey from to growth.
If you’ve attended this event, we’d love to hear about why you participated and how it impacted your life.
Our mission is to guide widows along a healthy pathway from hope and healing to growth and leadership, helping you move forward with confidence, resilience, and purpose. This is what your loved one would want for you.

A Lifeline for Widows
Modern Widows Club is a Lifeline of Impact and Support For Widows A conversation with Carolyn Moor, the founder of Modern Widows Club, sheds light on how support for widows facilitates their journey from grief to growth dur...
At Modern Widows Club, we offer extensive support through various online and virtual support groups and communities each month. These diverse gatherings provide a sense of commonality and connection for widows, creating a supportive environment.
Finding a community where you are understood as a widow is empowering. Whether you are a person of color, a survivor of su***de, Spanish-speaking, LGBTQ+, or have a strong interest in books, art, travel, parenting, dating, or spirituality, we have a group for you.
We support widowed women in many areas through our support communities and clubs. You are welcome to connect with us whenever you are ready. Feel free to join as many groups as you wish, all free of charge, thanks to our extraordinary volunteers, donors, and partners who, like us, believe in the importance of holistic widow support.
We know that finding a place of belonging with non-judgmental, compassionate, patient, kind, and loving “wisterhood” (wister®️, a blend of widow + sister) can transform the lives of widows.
Visit us at modernwidowsclub.org or check the link in our bio. Stay tuned for our brand new website launching this October, which will be even easier to use. Our nonprofit programs are growing, and we are committed to listening to and amplifying the voices of and their diverse needs.

These U.S. widow statistics tell a broader story about the experiences and journeys of women. Some are retired, some are still working, others are raising families or caring for extended families, and some are balancing a combination of these roles.
statistics are often overlooked by society. It’s not until we become widows ourselves, or know someone who has, that we start to understand the realities behind the numbers. The age at which we become widows, along with many other factors, contributes to our unique stories.
Becoming a widow is a profound shock. The loss of a loved one is indescribably difficult.
While we wish that widow support groups or communities were not necessary, we understand their importance. They provide us with the support we need as we navigate through grief, healing, and growth, helping us to move forward with hope toward a brighter future. A future of carting forward a legacy of love.

Before she became a , Winnifred Cooley had a "dream for women of the twenty-first century." Yet, she did not forget or render widows invisible in her 1904 book The New Womanhood.
Stating on page 143,
“Slowly and painfully, law after law in each state has been attacked, - timidly, but persistently, have women gone before legislative committees, pleading for better conditions, not for themselves (often enjoying wealth and protection), but for the poor women engaged in underpaid industries, abused wives, struggling against and , young girls, who in some states were only protected against the violence of man, up to the age of eight.
In behalf of women have en-treated legislation to gain it”
On page 137, she poignantly states in The New Womanhood 1904, “In America, it is regarded as a huge joke, if some one says, “We may have a woman President of the United States one day!” Do we forget that Great Britain was ruled over sixty years by a woman, that Spain, the Netherlands, and many countries have had and do have a girl and women sovereigns?”
I would have profoundly loved to meet Winnifred today. Her forward-thinking nature provides the encouragement many of us need to ensure that the voices of all women, especially women, are heard and considered in society and by humanity in 2024.

Our Story
Like every MWC story, ours starts with the simple act of loving someone.
As a women becomes newly widowed, she steps into the on going process of defining a new (and unwanted) self-identity without her partner. This reality is further heightened when she finds herself in a time-space quandary. For her, time has stood still, for the world at large, it has continued. It does not take long for her self-conscious awareness to reveal that these life circumstances cause a sudden and forever change. This internal and external change causes her to seek and find others by way of ‘re-socialization’, otherwise known as ‘finding her tribe.’
When she joins a new group, she will take on new norms, values and behaviors of that created ‘environment.’ This is why the positive approach we foster at MWC is vitally important in her healing and self actualization process. We meet her right where she’s at. Her first few steps will set the future trajectory for her ‘new me’ life. At MWC, we equally recognize and respect all our differences as an interfaith, multi-generational nonprofit. Our shared values and focus on unconditional love are what makes us stand out and highly effective in building greater communities.
At MWC we are interested in research based analysis, empirical investigations and surveys, conversations about subcultures, sociology, stigma and ‘dependency culture’ studies as well as positive psychology, ethnomethodology, physiologic effects of grief, the gender gap, meaning making, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (8 levels), emotional intelligence, pain to purpose resilience building, metanoia, adrenal fatigue, thanatology, neuroscience, compassion, trust, vulnerability, justice and spirituality.
