While alienated children typically describe hatred or fear of the alienated parent, gently probing into the nuances of these negative feelings virtually always reveals that these children believe that the alienated parent is self-centered, not interested in their wellbeing, and unloving. They are taught, and come to believe that they are not loved by that parent. This is absolutely child abuse in its most pure form.
The first criterion that inhabits virtually all parental alienation cases is Access and Visitation Blocking. The most important thing to understand about this criterion is that it occupies a vast continuum of possibilities.
J Michael Bone, PhD: Visitation Blocking This clip describes the role of visitation blocking in the creation of Parental Alienation.
Parental Alienation is a form of child abuse. The manipulation of one’s children to the belief that their other parent does not love them, is the cruelest form of child abuse.

Parental Alienation is Child Abuse It is important to understand and recall that Parental Alienation is a form of child abuse. The manipulation of one’s children to the belief that their other parent does not love them, is the cruelest form of child abuse.
The 3rd Symptom of Parental Alienation: Lack of Ambivalence. In my view, the alienated child’s lack of ambivalent connection to the once loved parent is essentially unnatural. It simply cannot be the result of occurrences only between that child and that parent.
Parent-child relationships are simply not that fragile. The deterioration must come from another source. Obviously that source is the alienating parent.

I frequently receive email requests for Parental Alienation expert witnesses in a given case, in a given town. The basis of the request is that if one has the right expert, the case is done. This is simply not the case. While having the right expert is an essential part of any case, it is only part of the puzzle.

Parental Alienation You Need More Than an Expert The benefits of hiring an expert to help prepare for your next Parental Alienation court case, and how to prepare to tell your story to a judge.
As Parental Alienation has become more familiar in the world, it is sometimes being used falsely. In this video I share insights on Parental Alienation and attachment between the child & parent.
The rules of evidence and the evidence code do more or less rule the issue of proof, but the subjective impact of causing the audience (the Judge) to believe your story is more the province of emotion, presentation, and even theater. These are, in fact, the principles – emotion, presentation, and theatrics - that predict outcome in Family Law cases where parental alienation is present. Not the law.

Parental Alienation The Truth About Family Court Dr . Bone outlines the truth about Family Court, and key factors to consider when preparing to defend a Parental Alienation case.
There is a debate within the professional community regarding just what causes children to become alienated within the context of their parents divorcing or its aftermath. The debate boils down to this question: Is the behavior of the alienating parent sufficient to cause children to become alienated, or does the targeted parent’s behavior also play a role?

The Professional Debate About How Children are Alienated Dr. J. Michael Bone explains why it is of paramount importance to understand the model your alienation advisor subscribes to, in order to best prepare for a positive outcome in court.
When a child begins to articulate that they no longer wish to see a parent, Mom or Dad, this often becomes problematic for the court.

J Michael Bone, PhD: Impact onto the Child I This clip describes how the environment of alienation and removal of the targeted parent combine to result in the child's alienation.
Part of the difficulty Parental Alienation specialists have in trying to explain to judges and attorneys that alienation may be happening in a case is it seems incredible that a once loving child who had a close bonded relationship with a parent is now professing hatred and demonstrating rejection for that parent.
There is nothing new about the alienation of a child’s affections from a parent. Children have been alienated, brainwashed, estranged, kidnapped & manipulated by family members for all of recorded history.
I frequently get the question, "How do you prove parental alienation in Court?"
My response is that, luckily, you do not have to prove it, you just have to get the Judge to believe that it is present. By this, I do not mean that your job is to falsely convince the Judge of anything, but that absolute proof of such a thing is not necessary.

Persuasive Rhetoric is a tool for selling ideas, beliefs and positions on a given topic or subject. It is unrelated to truth. It only refers to the spin, the story and the goal of winning over the audience. Nothing in the message requires truth.

When Parental Alienation is present, even in its earliest and most incipient forms, the case strategy must be different. Parental Alienation must be presented in ways that are not only different, but very nearly opposite strategically. Failure to do so is very likely to predict failure in litigation outcomes.

Parental Alienation is a phrase that refers to the behavior of parents. Watch this short video for examples.
J Michael Bone, PhD: Parental Alienation This brief clip describes the phenomenon that is referred to as Parental Alienation.
The alienating parent often comes across as more “together” than the falsely maligned targeted parent. However, since a key ingredient of parental alienation is falsely accusing the targeted parent, such accusations are founded on layers upon layers of lies, the architect of which is the alienating parent.
I often receive messages asking if I've written a book on the subject of Parental Alienation. The answer is yes. I co-authored "The Essentials of Parental Alienation Syndrome: It's Real, It's Here and It Hurts", you can find it on Amazon, Kindle or Paperback.
The Essentials of Parental Alienation Syndrome: It's Real, It's Here and It Hurts We are seeing an increase in high conflict, adversarial divorce cases in mental health practices and in the courtrooms around the country. These cases present with a significant amount of parental conflict and, as a consequence, represent a threat to the children caught in the middle of these con...
In this article I outline the foundation of what I believe is a very helpful set of Parental Alienation coping strategies designed specifically for targeted parents. Targeted parents, after all, live in perpetual states of reactiveness. The Targeted Parent is chronically left to respond to attacks, accusations, provocations and various slanders of all descriptions by various accusers.

Alienation vs Estrangement in Parental Alienation.
When a child is resistant to seeing a parent, the reasons can be reduced to two basic phenomena: alienation or estrangement. Within the professional community, these two words have been used interchangeably by various authors over the years. In an effort to reduce confusion that this usage may have caused, there is a growing acceptance of how these two words should be properly used.
First, "Alienation" refers to a child's resistance or refusal to see a once loved parent, typically within the context of divorce or post divorce. Alienated children are told distorted and untrue things about their once loved parent, which cause them to mistrust and become alienated from them. The key is that it is not that parent's actions that cause this alienation reaction, but rather it is the influence of the other parent in imparting this, that is the cause.
In the case of "Estrangement" it is that parent's own actions that have caused the child to not want to be with that parent. For example a child might become eventually estranged from a parent because that parent is neglectful or abusive, which would mean that this parent's own neglectful or abusive behavior that has caused that child to be resistant to seeing them.
A child making an accusation may be telling the truth, or they may not be. The possibility that the accusation might be false is supported by a great deal of research. This does not mean that, especially in the context of divorce and post divorce, that all such accusations should be considered as being false, only that this should be considered.
The Second Ingredient of Parental Alienation False Allegations of Abuse: The Second Ingredient of Parental Alienation
When an alienated child actively and even aggressively takes whatever position the alienating parent takes, we can see how unnatural this is. When Parental Alienation is present, the alienated child will support even the most absurd position if it is offered by the alienating parent.
Parental Alienation refers to specific actions by the alienating parent. These behaviors are predictable and form an identifiable pattern.
J Michael Bone, PhD: Parental Alienation This brief clip describes the phenomenon that is referred to as Parental Alienation.
Without a child’s own contribution towards a campaign of denigration, the child is not truly alienated, and with it the indoctrinating parent can “sit back” and let the child be the voice of criticism of the Target Parent. This second component, its expression from the child, is what makes it so baffling and intimidating to those trying to help.
