WOODHULL RACEWAY LOSES ANOTHER ONE TO MOTHER NATURE.

With August 17, 2024, washout it makes six shows the track has lost in 2024.

Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.

(Woodhull, NY) Like so many other northeast race venues, the Woodhull Raceway has not been without its share of rained out events in 2024.

With the local area still ravaged from last week’s flooding by Tropical Storm Debby, Woodhull Raceway owner, Nikki Brewer and her staff were hoping for a reprieve from all the rain and devastation to get their Saturday, August 17 program into the record books.

Unfortunately for everyone a very heavy band of rain came rumbling through the Southern Tier of New York early Saturday morning once again saturating already wet grounds. That coupled with more rain throughout the day and a forecast of even more showers into the evening forced track owner, Nikki to toss in the towel.

“We did have an exceptionally good drying week after the flood waters retrieved which helped dry things out, but the heavy overnight rain coupled with more showers through the morning and early afternoon did us in. This makes six lost shows in the season including last week’s flood. It is getting late in the season and hard to make these things up.” That is according to Nikki Brewer.

With the weeks winding down till the Season Point Championship Night on September 7, 2024, it does not leave much time for racers to stake their claim to their respective class titles.

The CRSA 305 Sprints were to be included in the August 17 card and it is yet to be seen if the Mike Emhoff led organization will be able to find a suitable date to return to Woodhull.

However, the popular 305-Winged Sprint Car Group is already set to return to Woodhull on Saturday, Sept. 14 as part of the original 2024 schedule.

A trio of marketing partners in Pepsi, Bradley Supply of Hornell and Town and Country Disposal in Addison were set go, however they will all be rescheduled to a later date.

Additionally, the Hometown Excavation Sportsman were to have run a special $1,500 to win feature and should it be made up all the details will be posted on social media.

Upcoming next Saturday, August 24 at the popular Steuben County Speedway it will be Backpack Night at the track in addition to a Regular Super 7 Show featuring all the weekly divisions of competition.

In addition, the Mighty Insinger Performance Modifieds will tee it up in their Annual King of the Ring.

ERICK RUDOLPH FINALLY GETS A WELL-EARNED WOODHULL RACEWAY WIN CAPTURING THE 3RD ANNUAL HONORING ALICE EVENT.
Bryce Davis wins one for his uncle and the homies in the Darwin Davis Memorial RUSH CLM Series Event and Jerry Lobdell Jr. captures the Empire Street Stock Feature in first ever attempt.
Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.
(Woodhull, NY) Erick Rudolph has a brilliant career in every form of Motorsports that he has attempted in his career.
However, the Woodhull Raceway has been a challenge for the third generation, Ransomville, NY speedster as he has been kept out of victory lane in all his previous attempts.
“I think the first couple times I ever came here I did not even qualify. Just could not figure this place out. But, last year in this event I finished second and backed that up with a win here tonight.” That according to a jubilant Rudolph in victory lane.
For Rudolph his $5,500 win in the 55 lap Honoring Alice Event puts his name into the books alongside Bily VanPelt and Ajay Potrzebowski Sr. who won the first two events named in memory of Woodhull’s Firs Lady, Alice Williams who alongside of her late husband, Jim promoted the Woodhull Raceway prior to selling it after the first 33 years of the track existence.
Rudolph’s victory was no walk in the park as he went toe to toe with last week’s feature winner, Dayton Brewer for the first half of the 55-lap feature grind.
Brewer led the opening sixteen laps after pulling the pole position pill as he and outside row one starter, Ron Cartwright Jr. brought the field to green.
Rudolph lined up fifth on the opening grid and very methodically worked his way to the front and by lap ten was up to second and charging.
The first of eight caution flags would fly on lap fifteen followed by a second caution on the same lap and on the ensuing restart, Dayton Brewer could continue to set a blistering pace, but Erick Rudolph was poised and took over the top spot on lap sixteen.
The lead duo would swap the lead back and forth numerous times over the next several circuits before Rudolph would gain control and from there stretch his advantage.
The countless cautions flag slowdowns, 8 total would keep not just Brewer, but Jeff Daugherty, Danny Johnson and Ajay Potrzebowski all within eyesight of the race leader and well within striking distance.
However, on every restart, Run, Run Rudolph was too much to manage as he ran away and hid from his fellow competitors.
As attrition was taking its toll lap cars were hardly a problem from the lead group and for Rudolph it was just a matter of hitting his marks as he cruised to a half straight away win over Brewer and Daugherty would complete the podium.
Wally Wade of Canisteo, NY had his best run in a Modified came home for fourth at the finish as he was chased across the line by Russ Morseman who came from the rear on at least two separate occasions to round the top five.
For the Woodhull faithful it was a sweep of positions two through five.
As part of the 3rd Annual Honoring Alice Event, the Vicki Emig led RUSH Crate Late Models were part of the event after a successful run last year and they did not disappoint the huge crowd in attendance.
Bryce Davis began his illustrious career at Woodhull in the Youth Warrior Division prior to moving up the food chain into Mini Stocks and 360 Late Models prior to taking on the challenge of competing in the very tough RUSH CLM Division where he captured the 2017 overall RUSH CLM Championship.
Davis has also had a stint or two in a potent Modified at both Woodhull and Little Valley.
Now with a wife and young family Davis picks and chooses his fights only competing in a limited schedule but when he does show up it sends shock waves through the field and there was no way he was going to pass on a big event named in memory of his late uncle Darwin Davis at a track that is just a mere fifteen miles from his shop in nearby Canisteo.
Darwin Davis was a regular competitor at Woodhull for years prior to losing his life in a traffic related accident in September 2008.
After claiming his opening night qualifying heat event followed by a “W” in the Dash it landed his potent #94 on the pole for the thirty- lap feature A Main where he would go to lead all laps taking home the $4,000 pay day and the nicely crafted B H Log Hauling sponsored trophy.
For Davis it was get out the broom as he swept the entire RUSH CLM portion of the night. Quick Time, Heat, Dash, Feature!
“This win is massive for my family, claimed Davis in victory lane. I have won a few races this year and had a couple of heartbreakers, but to come back to where I for my start and take home the win is just awesome.
Davis was absolutely mobbed in victory lane by is crew chief led father, Dave Davis along with his wife and children along with what seemed like a hundred local fans who came there specifically to see their hometown favorite walk away in victory and they did not go home disappointed.
However, Davis’s win did not come easy as he had to hold off a 14-year-old by the name of Brock Pinkerous who was all over Davis like a cheap shirt for the entire thirty lap distance.
Lap after lap Bam Bam Pinkerous was right there waiting for a Davis miscue which never happened as the youngster from Western NY gave the capacity crowd a thrill but came up a car length shy at the finish.
2023 Honoring Alice winner, Jeremy Wonderling, another former Woodhull great prior to full time commitment to the RUSH Series rounded the top three podium after never more than a car length off the rear deck lid of Pinkerous.
2023 Woodhull Raceway Empire Crushing Rush CLM Track Champion, Austin Allen of Canisteo and a shop mate to Davis rallied from last to fourth after drawing a lap three caution after coming to a stop in turn one.
Fifth place was claimed by Mike Wonderling from Scio, NY after challenging for the lead early on.
For a complete and concise look at the entire RUSH CLM Tour Event at Woodhull including contingency prices and other valuable information simply log on at www.rushlatemodels.com.
The Mike Welch led Empire Street Stocks rounded out the aggressive 3 card event and like last year’s feature, Glenn Whritenour looked poised to take home the victory.
In the early going Whritenour of nearby Jasper, NY was in command, but had to contend with Mike Spencer piloting one of Whritenour’s former creations.
Lap after lap Spencer kept up the pressure until Jerry Lobdell Jr. came into the picture after beginning the thirty-lap affair on the pole but drifted to third after the opening green.
When into second, Lobdell began to draw a bead on GW as the event was now well past the half- way mark.
Four caution flags with the last coming on lap sixteen kept Lobdell and Spencer who was as now third within striking distance of the high- flying Whritenour but by lap twenty, Lobdell had caught the race leader, and it was now a two car, ten lap shootout.
Lap after lap Lobdell would exit turn four on the bottom with GW running the middle, but the drag race to the flag stand was always won by GW by only a bumper.
For five laps this was the norm, begore Lobdell used an inside move entering turn one to muscle his way around Whritenour and go to the win.
Whritenour would finish a disappointing second with Spencer third.
Last week’s feature winner, Dan Gardner was back after a year layoff and was a contender early challenging GW for the lead before fading to fourth at the finish followed by multiple 2024 feature winner, Clayton McClean of Elkland.
“I have been a good friend of Glenn for a long time, stated Lobdell in fact this is one of his former cars. He does all my bodywork every winter and any other updates, as necessary. For me to come here and beat him at his track is special.”

WOOLDHULL RACEWAY SHORTS.
In the Modified Division, several invaders made their way to Woodhull for the Honoring Alice Event.
Danny Creeden, Ron Cartwright Jr., Tyler Siri, Danny Johnson, Erick Rudolph, Justin Wright and Alan Komoar. Other than Rudolph none had good finishes.
A deluge of rain hit the greater Woodhull region three days prior to the event wiping out pit roads and turning the entire back straight away into a large lake prompting track owner, Nikki Brewer to move the original date from Tuesday to Wednesday, however with the abundance of rain the track experienced it made for little or no time to get the large amount of water out of the surface which caused for choppy corners, plenty of caution flags and lots of attrition. However, the huge crowd was treated to plenty of great three wide racing with the features in the Rush CLM and the Empire Street Stocks coming right down to the wire.
For Bryce Davis it was a hometown victory as he swept the entire night of action in front of a large contingent of Davis followers.
Bam Bam Pinkerous is authentic. The fourteen-year-old set second quick time won his heat finished second in the Dash and gave Davis fits the entire 30 lap distance. On top of all that he was able to hold multi time RUSH CLM Series Champion, Mr. Excitement, Jeremy Wonderling who finished third.
It was difficult for fans to watch the battle at the front between Davis and Pinkerous or the show being put on by Austin Allen who lost power on lap three, went to the rear and put on a brilliant drive from the back of the stacked field to finish fourth.
Dayton Brewer has been on fire at Woodhull the past two weeks after a dismal 2024 season. Engine issues have been the biggest problem, but with a win in late July coupled with a runner-up finish to Erick Rudolph things are looking up for the second-generation pilot who now resides in Woodhull.
It is a rarity whenever Street Stock driver, Glenn Whritenour gets beat at Woodhull, but after dominating most of the Empire Street Stock 30 lap feature that is what happened when he was passed by Thunder Mountain regular competitor, Jerry Lobdell Jr.

DEVISTATING AREA FLOODING FORCES WOODHULL RACEWAY TO CANCEL ACTIVITIES FOR SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2024.
Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.
(Woodhull, NY) For the second time in three years the greater Woodhull, NY area has been devastated by regional flooding from the lingering effects of tropical storm Debby.
Tropical storm Fred was the culprit in August of 2021 which caused major flooding within the region.
Up to five inches of rain fell in the area in a brief period washing out town, county and state highways and bridges in communities like Woodhull, Troupsburg, Jasper, Addison, Greenwood and Canisteo.
The Northern Tier of Pa. also received major damage including the communities of Elkland, Osceola and Westfield.
“There is no way we can race this weekend, stated Woodhull Raceway owner/promoter, Nikki Brewer. All downtown Woodhull got clobbered again which wiped out every business. The entire fire department and several other volunteers are going to be busy for days pumping basements of some 50 homes that have been evacuated by officials. Many of the roads leading to the track will be closed for extended periods of time while town, county and state crews do their clean-up. We do not want any of our fans, race teams or employees out driving on roads that have been closed by a State of Emergency.”
Woodhull has a large contingent of fans and race teams that travel from Canisteo and Corning. Rt. 417, the main highway from those two areas, will be closed indefinitely for repairs according to authorities.
This is the second time in three years that Woodhull has had to cancel a show due to area flooding. It was almost three years ago to the day that that the greater Woodhull area got hammered with high water which forced the track to close for a week allowing crews to do cleanup work.
It should also be noted that the Woodhull Raceway did not get spared from any flood damage as the racing surface was completely under water to say nothing about soft grounds in both pit and grandstand parking areas.
With the cancellation it means that Woodhull will now be down to their final four-point races which complete on September 7, 2024, with the Annual Season Point Finale.
Cole Trucking and Gravel of Cameron Mills, NY along with the New York State Stock Car Association were to have been nightly sponsors for the August 10 event, however they will be rescheduled to a later date.
Up next at the Woodhull Raceway on August 17, 2024, it will be the return of the CRSA 305 Sprints along with the Insinger Performance Modifieds, Hometown Excavation Sportsman, Empire Crushing LLC RUSH CLM, Southern Tier Customs Street Stocks, Sawyer Camper and RV Service Hobby Stocks along with the Wicked Tee’s Youth Warriors.
The night sponsored by Pepsi, Town and Country Disposal along with Bradley Supply will find the crate sportsman competing for $1,500 to win first prize.
For more information leading up to the August 17 event keep a watchful on Woodhull Raceway.
The ownership and management of the Woodhull Raceway are keeping all area residents, farmers, businesses, fire and rescue along with all other emergency personnel in their thoughts during this most challenging time.
In addition, numerous race teams, fans, employees and sponsors of the track have been affected by the flooding.

08/09/2024

Due to the flooding in the surrounding areas, we have determined to cancel tomorrow’s show, 8/10/24. Our thoughts and prayers are with our community at this time.
