I find this so helpful to remember especially during seasons of difficult teaching with a student who requires a different type of approach!

Being the "boss" comes with a lot of perks, but let's face it: setting boundaries in your business can be tough even after years of practicing. Why?

Because boundaries can easily shift. Especially if we aren't mindful of strengthening them on a consistent basis. One of the biggest reasons we avoid that task is because boundaries can feel "personal," ya know?

And I think that's especially true if you're in the service industry.

Our "service" as music teachers consists of our vast music experience as educators, but our teaching and presentation styles are also tied to who we are as human beings... which can make boundary building feel difficult.

These boundary setting tips are a collection of things I've learned over the years... some just through trial and error, and others were passed down to me through my amazing coach, Michelle Markwart Deveaux.

Some parents view piano lessons as an activity, much like cheerleading, soccer, etc. Those who appreciate the importance of music as an educational pursuit, usually make sure their children are not over-committed and most of them become good musicians. The ones who view music as an activity let the children quit when they are challenged and make excuses for why the child doesn't practice.
~Unprepared lessons cost the same as prepared ones but their value is substantially compromised.~
My parents gave me the choice of "which instrument I would like to learn", but not IF I wanted to learn to play an instrument.
