Schuetzen shooting
Of Germanic–Swiss origin, the shooting called Schuetzen was practiced for centuries practically unchanged throughout much of central Europe, and by the 1880s it had become predominantly popular. It was done in the standing, or offhand, position at targets from 90 or 180 metres (98.4 or 196.8 yards) outdoors, and at 23 metres (25.1 yards) indoors. The sport began to decline in Europe and the United States in the 1920s.

After World War I, interest in target rifle shooting grew rapidly with shooting clubs and associations numbering in the thousands. A great part of this growth was in small-bore—.22-calibre rimfire—shooting.

In 1896, French pistol champion Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the first modern Olympic Games.

The first games had nine sports including shooting.

Included in the program were four pistol and two high-power rifle events. Since then, shooting events have been included every year at the Olympics except for the 1904 and 1928 Games.

Individual and team events were also included until they were eliminated in 1948.

An NRA Shooting Sports Journal | USA Clay Target League Shatters Participation Record With 37,158 Registered Student-Athletes For Spring 2024 Season USA Clay Target League breaks its own record for participation in 2024 with more than 37,000 student-athletes participating this spring.

According to The National Shooting Sports Foundation (2018), Since the start
of the new millennium, interest in target shooting has continued to skyrocket with overall participation up by more than 28% since 2001. It maybe a surprise to some, but not to anyone who has been to a range in the last 10 to 15 years, female participation is driving much of this growth with their participation increasing more than 80% in that same time. Perhaps more significantly, this growing legion of shooters, whether avid or casual, spends billions of dollars each year. This means target shooting is not simply a fun pastime that teaches responsibility and can be enjoyed by everyone, but is also an important driver of the United States economy.

In 2016, more than 20 million Americans spent money to participate in target
shooting in this country. These recreational shooters spent an estimated $16.9 billion on equipment and travel related to their sport. Nearly $5 billion of this spending was on shooting-related trips, including meals, fuel and lodging. The remaining $11.9 billion was spent on equipment, fees and instruction.
