Good morning patients and families,
We have been asked by many what the hospital and our office policy will be when the state of emergency for the pandemic ends on May 11. The CEO of St. Vincent Hospital, Dr. Carolyn Jackson, sent us a policy statement last week. Patients and visitors in the hospital with respiratory symptoms will be asked to wear a mask. This policy will extend to our patients as well which may include nasal discharge as well. Any staff working in the hospital, which includes Worcester Pediatrics, who have had 2 doses of the COVID vaccine may choose to work mask free as long as they are not sick. If they have not had 2 doses of the COVID vaccine, they are to work with a mask on.
Worcester Pediatrics will continue to separate sick visits from well child visits. This means if you are here for a sick visit, please stop at the front door, call the front desk, and you will be checked in and then met at the back door.
Lastly, some hard policies about visits with myself. Chemotherapy is under way. I am at risk for serious infections. I have a central line in my chest now. My nurses are ready to ban all children 5 and under from seeing me. That being said, the answers MUST be NO to the following in order to see me when I am here: Has your child had a fever in the last 24 hours? Do they have a visible rash? Do they have a cough, and importantly, do they have any nasal discharge? It does NOT matter if it is “allergies.” There is bacteria in all of our noses and if a nose is running, then I am risk for that bacteria. Please take these questions my staff ask SERIOUSLY! These questions will also pertain to anyone accompanying the child to their appointment.
If I cannot see your child, my front staff and nurses will do their best to give you TWO choices: reschedule with me in the fall OR see one of my other providers. There is absolutely no need to be rude or impolite to my front staff. They are real people just doing their job as best as they can.
Regards,
Paulette Kimball-Wren MD
