Here are 4️⃣ signs it's time for your child to visit the dentist!

1️⃣ Persistent Tooth Pain: Don't ignore tooth pain! Tooth pain rarely goes away on its own and can become much worse without treatment.
2️⃣ Bleeding Gums: Bleeding gums are a sign of incorrect dental care but mostly poor gum health which should always be checked out by a dentist.
3️⃣ Filling or Crown Wear and Tear: If an old filling or crown becomes damaged or falls off, get to the dentist quickly so that it can be repaired before infection sets in.
4️⃣ Bad Breath: Chronic bad breath can be a sign of a serious problem like gum disease or tooth decay.

We are proud to offer emergency dentistry services to help patients stay healthy and maintain their natural smiles 😃

Common pediatric dental emergencies include ⤵️
🦷 Toothache: If your child has a toothache, examine their teeth and gums. Look for signs of gum swelling, dark or white spots on the teeth, redness, and bleeding gums. Symptoms of toothache include- shooting pain, tooth pain worsening during sleep, chronic, dull pain, sensitivity to temperature/bite pressure/sweet foods
🦷 Broken Teeth: There are two types of tooth fractures: crown and root fractures. Crown fractures occur when the tooth visible above the gum line breaks and the tooth root remains intact. With root fractures, you can’t tell the tooth is fractured. With a full exam we can provide a treatment plan!
🦷 Knocked-out tooth: If your child’s adult tooth is knocked out, try to locate the tooth. Hold the tooth by its top or crown, and avoid the roots. Transport the tooth to our office in a cup of saliva to keep it moist. Have your child bite on a clean piece of cotton, tissue, or gauze to minimize bleeding.

If your child has a dental emergency, please call (508) 625-5534 📲 We will find the cause of your child’s dental emergency and provide prompt care!

How can parents help their children prevent tooth decay? 🦷

🪥 Good oral hygiene at home removes bacteria and leftover food that combines and form cavities.
🪥Do not put your child to bed with a bottle that contains milk or juice. Sugars from these liquids can coat the mouth and attract decay-causing bacteria.
🪥 Avoid frequent snacking on foods high in carbohydrates and sugar. Limit sodas, sports drinks, and flavored waters.
🪥 Schedule pediatric dental visits every six months.

We are happy to offer sedation dentistry for children at our office 🪥🦷

Does your child struggle at the dentist? Do they have a lot of work to get done? Sedation dentistry might be the best option for them!

Sedation offers many benefits for patients of all ages:
• Stress-Free Dental Visits: Under sedation, your child will feel comfortable enough not to feel anxiety from treatment. Your child will feel comfortable and relaxed.
• Reduced Gag Reflex: Sedation is useful for patients with a poor gag reflex. This problem can make it hard for our team to work on patients. Under sedation, patients will not have gag reflex problems.
• Struggles With Dental Fear: General anesthesia can be the best way to proceed with dental treatment and keep these patients at ease.
• Patients In Need of Extensive Treatment — such as fillings, crowns, and extractions — or who have severe decay can also benefit from this type of sedation. When patients are completely relaxed, our dental team can complete all of the work necessary in a shorter amount of time. Since the child is asleep, they won’t experience any pain or discomfort from the dental procedure!

Answering a commonly asked question: Why are baby teeth important? 🦷

The primary or “baby” teeth are important for a number of reasons. They provide proper function and help maintain good nutrition for your child. Baby teeth are important in speech development and reserve the space for permanent teeth. Early loss of primary teeth from decay or trauma can affect permanent teeth.

What do our dental hygienists do? 🪥

Dental cleanings are what our amazing hygienists specialize in! They are responsible for giving your child's pearly whites the deep cleaning they need twice a year 😃

During a dental cleaning, our dental hygienists will scale the teeth, removing bacterial buildup from the teeth and gums. Then, they will brush, rinse, and polish the teeth. One of many children’s favorite parts of the process is choosing the toothpaste flavor. 👏

After the cleaning, we can provide a fluoride varnish and recommend topical fluoride to mineralize teeth and strengthen the outer tooth enamel. Fluoride helps prevent cavities in children! We do ask that your child refrain from eating or drinking 30 minutes after treatment to help the fluoride pe*****te the tooth enamel.

Answering a commonly asked question: why should your child see an orthodontist? 🦷

Seeing an orthodontist, it's so much more than "fixing" crooked teeth to create a beautiful smile! Our main concern is the health and function of their teeth. Crooked, crowded teeth can cause multiple dental issues, including:

🦷 Tooth Decay and Gum Disease
→ Crowded teeth are difficult to clean properly with a toothbrush and floss. As a result, plaque and tartar can build up on the teeth and gums. Untreated, it can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.

🦷 TMJ Disorder
→ Crooked teeth may lead to a misaligned bite, which puts pressure on the jaw joints. This pressure can lead to muscle irritation, inflammation, pain, chronic headaches, or migraines. In some cases, straightening teeth can reduce TMJ symptoms.

🦷 Cracked, Chipped, and Broken Teeth
→ Misaligned teeth can increase bite pressure on some teeth more than others. This can lead to crack teeth, chipped teeth, and broken cusps. Sometimes, if a crack is deep enough, it can irritate the nerve. In this case, your child would need nerve treatment and a dental crown.

🦷 Speech Issues
→ Crooked teeth can impact tongue placement and airflow. Misaligned teeth can prevent the tongue from pronouncing “s” and “z.” This can lead to lisps. At early visits, we will examine your child’s palate and tooth formation to determine if there is a chance their teeth could delay speech development.

Patients can wear braces for months or even years, everyone should be happy with their colors! Luckily, you can switch them out at every visit- red, blue, green, purple, and pink are some of the most common braces colors, or you can mix and match to create your own color combination! Answering a commonly asked question: What exactly are cavities? 🦷

Cavities are holes formed by tooth decay caused by plaque build up, poor dental hygiene, sugary foods & more! Bacteria is the main culprit of tooth decay. If your child has higher than average cavity-forming bacteria, they’ll be at a higher risk for developing decay.

Common signs of dental cavities can include:
- Visible holes or pits in teeth
- Tooth sensitivity to temperature and pressure
- Bad breath
- Brown or white spots on teeth
- Tooth pain and discomfort

Stay ahead of tooth decay and cavities forming by bringing your child to the dentist for routine exams and cleanings. We recommend coming in every 6 months. Book your child's next exam at our office today. 🗓

Sealing out tooth decay to keep your child's teeth healthy 😄

🪥 Dental sealants are clear or shaded plastic protective coatings placed on back teeth to prevent cavities. This creates a protective barrier against food particles and harmful bacteria that can break down tooth enamel. Since the molars are difficult for children to clean properly, sealants are a great option to prevent cavities from forming.

🪥 Your dentist will recommend dental sealants when the molars erupt, typically between the ages of 6 and 12. The first set of molars erupt around age 6, while the second set emerges by age 12.

🪥 Sealants provide quick and painless treatment that we can provide in just one office visit. To begin treatment, we ensure that the teeth are clean. Typically, we provide dental sealants following a routine dental cleaning.

Schedule your child's next appointment at our office and inquire about sealants today! 🗓️

A panoramic x-ray is a type of dental x-ray that shows a broad view of the mouth, including teeth, jaws, nasal area and surrounding tissues and structures!

This type of x-ray delivers a flat image and is non-invasive and easier to take than other x-rays. These types of x-rays are taken in accordance with the AAPD recommendations of growth and development for young patients.

🦷 First panoramic x-ray should be around 7 or 8 years old as permanent teeth start erupting. We are checking for correct development of all permanent teeth, missing or additional teeth, health of the TMJ and correct angulation of erupting teeth as well as for any cysts, growths and other bone problems.

🦷 The next panoramic x-ray should be taken around 12 years old after permanent dentition has replaced baby teeth. At that age, we check for all of the above conditions and readiness for orthodontic treatment as well as health of the jaw, teeth and all oral structures before such treatment begins.
