Wylie East High School Culinary Arts

The Introduction to Culinary Arts students mastered chocolate dipping this week as they made 800 Chocolate Dipped Marshmallows on candy canes for our visit to McMillan Junior High. We hope the 8th graders enjoyed the treat.

Each year we get to send to 2 Ambassadors to the junior high schools to tell them about our programs. This year's Ambassadors are Major and Markell. They did a great job at McMillan Junior High today talking to the 8th graders about the exciting opportunities for next year in Culinary Arts.

The Introduction to Culinary Arts students enjoyed learning to make Chicken Tortilla Soup with all the toppings!

We were honored to provide box lunches for the Wylie East Robotics Teams to take with them to competition this past weekend. We hope they enjoyed their croissant sandwiches (Ham, Turkey, and Roasted Vegetable) with chips and a homemade chocolate chip cookie conveniently packaged for travel.

The talented students from my Advanced Culinary Arts class prepared the ultimate Thanksgiving Feast today. The students selected the menu, the recipes (which included a few family recipes), pre-prepped and cooked this delicious meal. The menu started with Deviled Eggs, Stuffed Jalapenos Wrapped in Bacon and a Charcuterie Board with Homemade Cranberry Jalapeno Jam as appetizers. The main meal was Roasted Turkey, Honey Glazed Ham, Bacon Cheddar Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese, Glazed Yams, Garlic and Parmesan Cheese Roasted Broccoli, Honey Glazed Carrots, Creamed Corn, Cornbread Stuffing, and Collard Greens. They ended the meal on a sweet note with Apple Pie, Pumpkin Pie, and Tres Leche Cake. Parents - they are now ready to help you next week with any of your holiday plans.

Mel and Aslee created an Authentic Mexican restaurant named Sol y Luna's which means means sun and moon. They have made every effort to pay homage to the culture.

Thank you to The Wylie ISD Education Foundation and The Cross Church for making this grant possible. The grant will purchase the tools necessary for our Principles of Hospitality & Tourism students to design and build 3 Dimensional Model restaurants. This will provide the students with the opportunity to learn various aspects of the restaurant industry with a hands on project. I can't wait to see their models come to life!

As our Principles of Hospitality & Tourism students continue to wrap up their restaurant model menus and interior mood design board, I continue to be impressed by their work. Tonight, I would like to feature the work of Kaleb and Rachel on their restaurant Homestyle BBQ.

Tommy and Drew are designing an upscale Asian restaurant for their restaurant model project named Red Dragon Ramen. They have been fine tuning all the details in their concept and are ready for the next phase.

The Principles of Hospitality & Tourism students have been creating their model restaurant concepts. Graysen and Hope have finished creating a menu and interior design mood boards for their restaurant named The Haystack Steakhouse. They will work on their architecture design next week. I can't wait to see their model come to life.

The Introduction to Culinary Arts students and the Advanced students provided dessert for the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony this week. They provided Mini Cherry Cheesecake Bites, Brownie Bites, Cream Puffs, Mini Lemon Pound Cakes with Glaze, and Hand Rolled Chocolate Truffles. Congratulations to the 113 Raiders who were inducted.

The Advanced students prepared Chicken Pot Pie Casseroles to fulfill our customer orders for this week. Thank you to everyone for supporting our program!

Our Introduction to Culinary Arts students have been enjoying the process of making Grilled Cheese with Creamy Tomato Basil Soup. This included making vegetable stock to use as the base of their soup.

The Advanced Culinary Arts students made Salted Caramel Sauce this week for our customers to enjoy. This salty sweet treat came in a mason jar alongside 2 apples. We are grateful for Mrs. Kam and her Interior Design class who came and packaged them beautifully.

Congratulations to our awesome leader, Chef Carlin! She was named as one of the Wylie East Staffulty Members for term 1!

The Principles of Hospitality & Tourism classes have recently started a project that will last 12 weeks. They will be creating, designing and building a restaurant model. Here are some of their creative restaurant logo's.

The Advanced Culinary Arts class has been busy this week. We were honored to partner with our talented Theater Department for GREASE. We provided Mini Cakes, Cake Popsicles, and Trail Mix for the patrons to purchase and enjoy during the show.

The Introduction to Culinary Arts students wrapped up their knife skills unit by making Pico De Gallo. They did a terrific job! We hope our staffulty enjoyed the spicy snack.

Principles of Hospitality students have spent the last two weeks working super hard to prepare for their Food Handler Certification exam! Today we celebrated that ALL students in first period passed the exam! We now have 28 certified food handlers 🤩🥳

The Hilton Anatole Hotel hosted our Principles of Hospitality & Tourism students this week. They provided the students with an all access tour of the facilities. This included the front and back of the house of their banquets facilities as well as their upscale restaurant, SER. They also toured the housekeeping area, Verandah Spa and Gym and JadeWaters Resort Pool area.

In a kitchen you have to be alert and always ready to respond to whatever happens. Earlier this week the students in our Advanced Culinary Arts class experienced a technical challenge with a piece of equipment. The class worked together to respond quickly and professionally to the situation. I am one proud teacher.

Wylie Way Day part 2! About 500 total students participated in this workshop today! We owe a huge thank you to Advanced Culinary students Summer, Michael, and Scarlett, plus Intro student Tyler, for being our Lab Assistants today and helping us teach and manage these large groups!

Wylie Way Day part 1! CTE students got to choose sessions to attend that would teach them some new skills. In the culinary lab, students learned how to set up a formal place setting and how to do two types of formal napkin folds!

Where do you put your students BEST work when they bring it home? If it's on the refrigerator, that's what we do too! Our Principles of Hospitality & Tourism students have been learning the minimal internal temperatures for cooking different foods this week.

The Introduction to Culinary Arts students treated the staffulty to Carrots and Celery served with Homemade Ranch and Southwest Ranch.

What do a black light flashlight and Glo Germ lotion have in common? You guessed it. Handwashing! The Principles of Hospitality & Tourism students practiced the proper way to wash their hands today.
